I've enjoyed these authors but the genre is unfamiliar to me so I don't know who the greats are. When I google for suggestions I don't feel confident with what comes up because I bought one of the recommended authors, Dorothy Sayers, and it's agatha christy/Poirot eque, not my cup of tea. With Chandler and Highsmith I like the era, the noir aspect, Chandler's character descriptions and dialogue and Highsmith's tension building and conflicted morality. I'd be grateful if anyone had some suggestions.

Dashiell Hammett - Maltese Falcon is fantastic
James Ellroy - LA Quartet

Aha, the same place the recommended Dorothy Sayer also recommended James Ellroy. I tried Underworld and thought it was a little vulgar, and although set a couple of decades back, a little too contemporary for me... is LA quartet similar do you know? I love the film Maltese Falcon, I'll google Hammett straight away, thank you!
