Has anyone else read this? I must admit i'm struggling - nothing to do with the style, but I find it difficult to read about slavery. I enjoyed her previous books, especially The Observations, very much.

I loved The Observations too, and gave it as a present to loads of friends. Also enjoyed Gillespie and I, and I have Sugar Money on my to-be-read pile and looking forward to it.

I've read several books about slavery - The Underground Railroad, The Long Song, A Respectable Trade, Homegoing and Sacred Hunger all spring to mind - so the topic itself wouldn't put me off.

Will come back and update you once I've read it.

Gillespie and I stayed with me for a long time. I really don't fancy Sugar Money. I don't know why.

have you read The Observations? That's my favourite. I think the suthor was unfortunate that it came out at the same time as Fingersmith, which rather eclipsed it.

Yeah I enjoyed The Observations but something about Gillespie and I really resonated with me. The protagonist was so tragic.

Let me know how you get on with Sugar Money.

Best book I read last year. although can't describe it as enjoyable. Some of it was tough reading and Harris's excellent writing just makes it very uncomfortable. Sugar Money will stay with me for a long time.

I really enjoyed her other two books, but this one didn't sound appealing. I will definitely read it at some time though.

This puts me right off given the subject matter.

Gillespie and I messed me up, I know it probably sounds daft (everybody I convinced to read it was baffled at my reaction).
