I'm very happily going through an E M Forster phase. Who can I read of a similar ilk when I (sob) finish the last one?

It's his style- the way he deals with such dramatic events so gently.

DH suggests Jane Austen- different time but I know what he means. Graham Greene?
Barbara Trapido is a modernish equivalent.

Zadie Smith's "On Beauty" is a modern day reworking of Howard's End... also beautiful writing.

Graham Greene is a good one. I enjoyed Our Man in Havana.
