Can anyone recommend some novels similar to Sarah Waters'? I love her writing and attention to detail - and the gripping narratives.

I've read Life After Life and the Crimson Petal and the White, which are often recommended in the same breath as Waters' novels.

Maybe try Hannah Kent (Burial Rites and The Good People) and Anna Hope (Wake and The Ballroom.) Hope this helps.

Jane Harris - Gillespie and I and The Observations might hit the spot

Second Hannah Kent and also suggest Sarah Moss (Bodies of Light, Stories for Lost Children) and Emma Donoghue (The Sealed Letter, Slammerkin, The Wonder).

The Essex Serpent?
His Bloody Project?

Thank you! I've read the Essex Serpent but the others are new to me.

Ooh just what I wanted to know, I like all Sarah Waters and keep impatiently checking to see if she’s written anything new. Love it when there’s a twist.

I recommend The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell. Really reminded me of The Little Stranger in terms of detail and atmosphere.

Second Hannah Kent and Emma Donoghue. Also recommend Emma Flint: Little Deaths.
