Right, having seen the film about In cold Bllood and realising that Harper Lee was a childhood friend of TC, I have to read some.
Any suggestions which to start with ? I quite fancy In Cold Blood , but not sure if it is the best to start with.
TIA

I am not a massive fan but I'd go with either In Cold Blood or Breakfast at Tiffany's.
And if you like both, you must also read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

hannahsaunt · 10/04/2007 11:13

I do quite like and would start with Breakfast at Tiffany's.

lionheart · 10/04/2007 11:14

Or Other Voices, Other Rooms is a good introduction.

Marina · 10/04/2007 11:18

Bingo, I knew there was another good one lionheart.
Midnight is by John Berendt

Carmenere · 10/04/2007 21:16

What did you think of Daniel Craig in In Cold Blood.

popsycal · 10/04/2007 21:18

ooh is there a film...?

Swizzler · 10/04/2007 21:19

Other voices other rooms is good

FrannyandZooey · 10/04/2007 21:20

Oh please read Breakfast at Tiffany's first

it has such soul

In Cold Blood is an incredible book but is an unpleasant read and not without flaws

Breakfast at Tiffany's is beautiful, please read that

Carmenere · 10/04/2007 21:24

Sorry the film DC is in is called Infamous. About the In cold blood story.

popsycal · 10/04/2007 21:24

I have that here too, Franny!
(also I am still feeding ds2 and plan to keep going thanks to you!)

FrannyandZooey · 10/04/2007 21:31

Oh hooray! I am very happy! You can blame me when your nipples fall off and you walk in front of a bus due to lack of sleep

DarrellRivers · 11/04/2007 08:33

Thanks for the answers, I had forgotten this thread
Well, I shall start with Breakfast At Tiffany's becasue In Cold Blood does seem a little bleak(well just the subject matter) and i need something to lift my spirits after the night i had at work last night

And i must get the Infamous film out on DVD, have seen the other one with Phillip Seymour Hoffman in it and didn't warm to TC and I think the infamous one is meant to be more true to his character

Have started Breakfast At Tiffany's and am loving it.
I never quite 'got ' the film, I don't think i really understood Holly Golightly, well the book lets you understand her.
Thanks for the advice

All his books are great. (How did I know I'd find you here, Frances?)

Other American authors I'd recommend in the same spirit:

  • Carson McCullers (really great, seems forgotten now - the one about the wedding is best, I think, although Reflections in a Golden Eye is good, too)
  • Sherwood Anderson (totally forgotten now, really good, Winesburg Ohio best, all nonfiction completely dreadful. The story about the egg is good, too. All the fiction is great.)
  • William Saroyan

Eudora Welty for more Southern Gothic.

thanks for the tip, just finished Breakfast at Tiffanys.I loved it. So quick to read as well.
I think I will read one of my booker prize shortlisters next and then read an older book after that, alternating old and new, so will bear in mind your suggestions
