Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine

I just listened to this on audiobook and it was absolutely brilliant. But I really want to discuss it so was wondering if anyone else had read it and what they thought?

My one criticism is a massive spoiler so I won't say too much yet.

There's quite a lot of us who have read it, on a thread from last month. See if you can find it and join in Smile

NicolasFlamel · 08/09/2017 13:30

I absolutely loved it. It's one book I've read recently that I really can't criticise at all.

DollyParsnip · 08/09/2017 13:42

I loved it, read it in an afternoon and it's really stayed with me. I am hopeful there might be some opening for a sequel but part of me is worried it won't be as good!

Sallystyle · 08/09/2017 14:36

Loved it.

ouchthathurtsabit · 08/09/2017 19:22

I about Half way through on audible so I'll be back in a few days but I love it!

TheHatOfDoom · 08/09/2017 19:22

Where is that thread @AgentProvocateur? I thought I'd had a good hunt through this board before I posted this.

I think I hope there won't be a sequel @DollyParsnip because as much as I'd love more of Eleanor I think it might ruin it.

I can't find it now - I wonder if it was in Chat? It was interesting. I'll keep looking.

AgentProvocateur · 08/09/2017 20:27

Here it is www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/3000325-Eleanor-oliphant-is-completely-fine

Hated this book. Didn't believe in any of it - the characters, dialogue, situations etc. Also thought it was as funny as a hole in the head and that the author was unnecessarily influenced by reading The Rosie Project, which wasn't a great book anyway.

MsAwesomeDragon · 08/09/2017 22:17

I'm halfway through on audible too. I'm really enjoying it so far, I like her in a strange way. I'll be back next week to tell you what I think of the whole thing.

DollyParsnip · 10/09/2017 19:06

@hatofdoom I know, you are right (read the Rosie Project and was really disappointed in the sequel, so it's definitely possible to have too much of a good thing!). The characters have really stayed with me, and I found for the first time in ages they felt really human and real.

Sunshineandgin · 27/11/2017 07:59

Too much of a spoiler to ask who “Mummy” was that phoned her up if her mum also died in the fire?

AgentProvocateur · 27/11/2017 08:13

@sunshineandgin, as I understood it, no one phoned her. It was all in her head.

Sunshineandgin · 27/11/2017 09:13

@agentprovocateur thank you that does make sense, I guess I just felt I was left confused by the end as it took so long to unravel the story then it seemed to just stop. I like more of a rounded off ending I think.

LaganOnABubble · 08/04/2019 18:47

I’ve just finished this and loved it - I really took to Eleanor, and this was a seriously impressive first novel.

tripfiction · 08/04/2019 20:41

I liked it and loved the writing style. But the easy ending and change to an essentially autistic personality is far fetched #toosimple ... overall a pleasure to read

Fantasisa · 08/04/2019 20:57

I loved it and loved this on audible -
I think having her voice in my ear really helped me bond with Eleanor.

CaptainNelson · 08/04/2019 21:14

Hmm, not wild about this - I wouldn't say I hated it, but I found Eleanor's character very inconsistently developed - why would she go and get herself waxed all over? And other things that seemed like false ploys to make the book funny but didn't really work. I thought it was trying to be too many things.

Carpetburns · 09/04/2019 22:56

I LOVED this book. Can anyone else who loved it recommend something to follow it? Now struggling to find anything I think I'll enjoy even half as much

Cryalot2 · 10/04/2019 20:25

DD was gifted it in book form at Christmas and suggested I might like.
I bought on kindle ( I mainly read there) but tried but could not get into it at all nor see all he hype .
I have up , about a third of the way through.
That is something I rarely do.

Fantasisa · 10/04/2019 20:32

@carpetburns, I’m looking too. Kate Atkinson has been recommended to me.

Carpetburns · 10/04/2019 20:53

@Fantasisa - thank you! I'll give her a google.

yellowsun · 21/04/2019 09:51

I really enjoyed listening to this book. I also enjoyed the Seven Imperfect Rules of Elvira Carr which is similar.

HappydaysArehere · 21/04/2019 10:00

After Eleanor I found Three Things About Elsie.
