Oh, I enjoyed this book but it was quite heavy & took a long time to read. Have you read any of her other books?

MozzchopsThirty · 28/08/2017 11:51

No I bought it as a recommended travel read on buzz feed
But I'm finding it hard going

YES!!!
Stick with it - it becomes an incredibly tense thriller with a brilliant ending.
THe beginning is stodgy but it is worth it, imo.

alltouchedout · 28/08/2017 11:55

Yes yes yes. Oh it so does. I have to go and find my copy now. Such a book!

reallybadidea · 28/08/2017 11:59

It is good once you get into it, but whoever recommended it as a holiday read was having you on I think!!

urbanrock · 28/08/2017 12:01

It's one of favourite books ever. Really well written. Not a light holiday read though.

MozzchopsThirty · 28/08/2017 12:12

I'll stick with it then

Oh I love it. Please stick with it. The atmosphere it creates is incredible.

Mrsjohnmurphy · 28/08/2017 12:31

I thought it was bollocks

Mrsjohnmurphy · 28/08/2017 12:34

Didn't see what all the fuss was about at all.

RMC123 · 28/08/2017 12:39

I have tried and failed to read this three times. Lots of people rave about it but I just hates the pompous people in it. And I rarely abandon books!

Kuriusoranj · 28/08/2017 12:40

I thought it was truly awful - plodding nonsense. I do believe that lots and lots of people love it, but I genuinely don't see what they see in it.

MozzchopsThirty · 28/08/2017 12:54

Oh dear

Well I'll give it until 1/4 through and then ditch if it goes on

I bought Wild with it and that was boring as shit too!

It's one of my favourite books too, definitely worth sticking with.

pinkingshears · 28/08/2017 13:08

I also loved The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt (brilliant)
But The LIttle Friend - NO, couldn't get into it.
Odd.

Wormulonian · 28/08/2017 16:40

No - it doesn't. I know hordes of people adore this book and it gets listed in top 100 books to read before you die type articles but I couldn't believe how dull it was. I perservered but by the end thought "is that it?".

I also read The Goldfinch which had some good elements but the characters and scenarios were just too unbelievable.

UsedToBeAPaxmanFan · 30/08/2017 05:15

I read this on holiday about 22 (?) years ago and absolutely loved it. It does take a little while to get into but worth it.

I don't know why a pp is saying it's not a holiday read as I think it's a perfect holiday book. Surely on holiday is when you have time to throw yourself into a meaty book that benefits from a prolonged stint of reading rather than trying to get through it in 20 minute chunks every evening?

Funnily enough, dh started reading this on Saturday as he found it on the bookshelf. I've been recommening it to him for years. He couldn't put it down and had finished it by Monday despite not being an avid reader and usually taking weeks to finish a book. He loved it too.
