I remember giving my sister one I hadn't read called Snowfall which she apparently loved and lent round all her friends, I had to wait some time to borrow it off her though I don't remember it as well as Flambards now.

Will have to find a list of the Pennington books, I read Pennington's Seventeenth Summer but don't remember all the others mentioned.

Am resurrecting this because I have just finished Dear Fred
