Classics recommendations

I've just bought a Fire and using my Kindle app for the first time & it's been a revelation how easy it's been to sneak in a bit of reading whilst the kids are about! I'm currently reading The Great Gatsby and would like to read some more of the classics that are freely available from Amazon. Any suggestions? Particularly ones that aren't too taxing, although having said that I don't mind reading 'difficult' books if they're worth the effort!

I enjoyed rereading the Louisa May Alcott 'Little Women' and the other three books in that series, also the 'Katy' books. There are about eight in the 'Katy' series, so five more than I thought.
I'm currently reading Mansfield Park, I thought I'd read it years ago, but beginning to think I didn't. (My hands are itching to give Fanny a good slap though, she is a bit pathetic.)

What about Mrs Gaskell? North and South and Mary Barton are my favourites - great stories, plus you learn so much about the way people lived at the time.

Classic children's books can be a good halfway house - well written enough to feel "adult" but not too taxing! So things like:

The Little White Horse - Elizabeth Goudge
A Little Princess
The Secret Garden - both by Frances Hodgson Burnett
Anything by E. Nesbit

I'm currently reading The Grapes of Wrath - a straightforward read and very interesting. You could also try Of Mice and Men andTo Kill a Mockingbird, much beloved by English curriculums everywhere...Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is good.

Try the short stories of Oscar Wilde - beautiful, fairy tale-like, very moving.

And also I rediscovered 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall' through the free Kindle classics (by the lesser known Brontë, Anne). It's an interesting Victorian feminist novel, but also an easy-ish read.
