More contemporary stuff I've liked recently has been all the light we cannot see and in preservation for the next life.

I have read all the books in my house and fancy some more

Love Evelyn Waugh. Especially Sword of Honour trilogy. If you've read all his fiction have you read his travel writing? One of them is 92 Days. I think there's also Collected Travel writing. I really enjoyed them and are very similar in feel to his novels. Also the letters between him and Nancy Mitford.

Labels and When the Going was Good are two other travel titles.

Graham Greene - start with anything.

You might like Kate Atkinson Life After Life, Behind the Scenes at the Museum, for real people affected by history and war.

The Goldfinch by Donna Tarrt? Not the page turner all the way through that The Secret history is, but rich and involving and long.

Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides.

More recently I liked The Essex Serpent.
