From global bestseller Cathy Glass comes gripping new crime novel The Darkness Within, written under the name of Lisa Stone.

When critically ill Jacob Wilson is given a life-saving heart transplant, his parents are relieved that their darling son has been saved.

However, before long, his family are forced to accept that something has changed in Jacob. Their once loving son is slowly being replaced by a violent man whose mood swings leave them terrified – but is it their fault?

Jacob's girlfriend, Rosie, is convinced the man she loves is suffering from stress. But when his moods turn on her, she begins to doubt herself – and she can only hide the bruises for so long.

When a terrible crime is committed, Jacob's family are forced to confront their darkest fears. Has the boy they raised become a monster, or is someone else to blame? You know your son better than anyone... don't you?

interesting characters and an ending you can't guess

sarsar123 · 08/08/2017 16:29

An interesting story with a twist that i wouldn't have thought of. Maybe a bit scary too!

greensmith68 · 08/08/2017 16:50

a good plot with plenty of twists so it keeps you guessing till the end

Jezzamk · 08/08/2017 18:26

A believable plot is important. As much as I enjoy Stephen King and James Herbert, you know that it is never going to happen.

The Girl On The Train ticked most of the boxes for me.

I prefer thrillers set in the UK as they are easier to relate to.

knitnut24 · 08/08/2017 19:32

plenty of surprise twists and plenty of horrific gory detail.

Summerholidayblues · 08/08/2017 19:51

I like a range of characters - too few and it's easy to guess who the culprit is. However, some books have too many (often with similar names!!) and then I find they don't provide enough insight into different characters and their motivations.

I love books with great chapter endings - meaning you can't put a book down as you're so keen to read the next chapter..

wheretoyougonow · 08/08/2017 19:59

When you are not sure who is actually good/bad. I like the suspense of not knowing and plot twists. The best thriller I've read is Gone Girl.

Emmamaryd · 08/08/2017 20:12

Detailed characters, fast pace, good plot

Concerned321 · 08/08/2017 20:29

Lots of plot twists

freedomofspeech · 08/08/2017 21:26

There has to be plenty of surprises, but in a way that still makes the story believable and not just nonsense! A variety of well thought out characters.

bigchris · 08/08/2017 21:34

When I have to read right to the end in one sitting !

JasmineGreen · 08/08/2017 22:15

I like there to be a huge amount of background information, like in Foucault's Pendulum, so I don't know which direction it's going to end up going in.

svalentine60 · 08/08/2017 23:14

Has to be a lot of suspense and edge of your seat moments.

Tonkatol · 08/08/2017 23:23

I like a thriller to have a good story to it, not just be about the murders . I also like there to be plenty of twists and turns so that the book leaves you guessing until the end.

There are a number of authors of thrillers I like to read - Nora Roberts, Patricia Cornwell, Iris Johansen (Eve Duncan Forensic Thrillers), James Patterson Alex Cross series.

pinkspideruk · 08/08/2017 23:38

They have to be gripping, the storyline needs to be unpredictable but believable and they have to make you think

Caelaj07 · 09/08/2017 00:44

Suspense and plot twists, nothing too obvious and also something relatable and not too far fetched

Lydia30 · 09/08/2017 00:52

When you are certain after half the book that you know 'you did it' and then you find out you couldn't be more wrong and can't figure out who it is until you read the last page

maria08k · 09/08/2017 08:00

A believe that a great thriller has you on the edge of your seat, enough scare to entice you but not petrify you like a horror does. A good plot twist near the end is always an added bonus too!!!

kay071 · 09/08/2017 08:36

A good thriller captures your attention from the beginning to the end and has a lot of plot twists to throw you off.

Leanfun · 09/08/2017 09:00

A good suspense with great plot so you find it hard to put the book down. The characters become 'alive' and you want to follow all the twists and turns to see what happens to them.

helcrai · 09/08/2017 11:33

Anything that makes me go to bed early so that I can get a good hour's reading in before bedtime because I'm so gripped by the twists and turns of the plot. One of the best I have read- The Girl On The Train by Paula Hawkins.

Dessallara · 09/08/2017 12:09

Suspense, strange plot twists and unexpected ending.

SorchaMumsnet · 09/08/2017 12:23

Hi folks - thanks for all your thoughts on what makes a great thrilling read. I would agree that you really do need great characters that you care what happens to them (as well as a twisty plot and plenty of suspense-filled writing).

Congrats to @ClashCityRocker who has won a copy of The Darkness Within and a £100 voucher - email us your details at [email protected] so we can get your prize sent out to you :)

good characters, lost of suspense and plot twists

hann24 · 09/08/2017 13:21

I like it when you can'r guess the ending until it happens!

It's also great if there is a story running through the whole book that isn't just scary.
