From global bestseller Cathy Glass comes gripping new crime novel The Darkness Within, written under the name of Lisa Stone.

When critically ill Jacob Wilson is given a life-saving heart transplant, his parents are relieved that their darling son has been saved.

However, before long, his family are forced to accept that something has changed in Jacob. Their once loving son is slowly being replaced by a violent man whose mood swings leave them terrified – but is it their fault?

Jacob's girlfriend, Rosie, is convinced the man she loves is suffering from stress. But when his moods turn on her, she begins to doubt herself – and she can only hide the bruises for so long.

When a terrible crime is committed, Jacob's family are forced to confront their darkest fears. Has the boy they raised become a monster, or is someone else to blame? You know your son better than anyone... don't you?

Love a good twist! Characters showing their true colours in the last part.

rachelmi · 25/07/2017 12:52

Pacy , believable and characters you can relate to. Not too predictable.

rachelkanga · 25/07/2017 21:53

I think a good thriller needs to be full of twists throwing the reader of the scent. You think one character is involved and then something happens to make you realise it was somebody else, you then work out 'who it is' and again find out you are wrong. The final reveal should surprise you but then make you think, all the clues were there.

Cupcakeicecream · 25/07/2017 22:04

OMG definitely suspense. It builds the anticipation literally has the reader gripping with anxiousness. They always seem ems to have a brooding character in dark clothing. But it's not those you've got to watch out for its the character yoy would least expect the overly nice try to hard perfect citizens that become the villain. You've got to set the scene carefully delicate with the description an ominous mystery to the air misty atmosphere a dark forest where you here voices whispers in the wind whistling a foggy misty day where you cannot see your hand over your face. Cliffhangers with each chapter. An eerie town where everything seems weird almost quiet something just doesn't feel right but you cannot put you finger on so it niggles away at you until you look more into it investigate look more into. Everything starts to make sense clue clue until someone hinders your progress seems one step ahead at every turn. You start to question you motives who you can trust doubt everyone look over your shoulder.

A book you can't put down, a book which keep your heart pounding every time you turn a page.

CES82 · 26/07/2017 16:13

Has to be an unexpected twist to keep you guessing all the way to the end. And that feeling of wanting to find out, but at the same time not wanting the book to end.

vienetta · 26/07/2017 17:41

Something that you don't know is coming or the end that you predict is going to happen doesn't like the ending in My Sisters Keeper.

Topsyturvy01 · 27/07/2017 21:34

Lots of twists in the story line.

emilybc · 28/07/2017 10:58

Strong character development. I hate it when a character has no proper storyline or life and you can just tell they are the bad guy from the very beginning!

mishknight · 28/07/2017 20:38

Thillers that appeal to me most have intelligent, believable characters that I can relate to and unpredictable plots (maybe the odd twist). Have read and love most of the Jack Reacher novels

grannybiker · 29/07/2017 10:09

A roller-coaster read.
Draws you in, then, just as you think you know where it's going, throws in a whole new load of shocking twists and turns.

pixelwife · 29/07/2017 13:25

For me, a great thriller has lots of twists and turns and towards the end leads you to a conclusion that all the clues are pointing to... before throwing you a massive curveball and ending with a completely different ending to what you were expecting.

FuckingHateRats · 29/07/2017 22:24

I like when the narrative shifts voices so you are left in the dark until the end about how it actually pieces together - good example: Gone Girl.

badgermum · 31/07/2017 12:41

I love Martina Cole and Kimberley Chambers novels I have read them all and they cant release a new novel quick ebough for me!!! , their Books are mainly set around gangs and families and once you start them you cant put them down as their are twists and turns on every page. I particularly like it when a a novel has multiple points of view and you get inside the heads of many characters, I also think a good thriller needs a fast pace storyline.

angiehoggett · 01/08/2017 13:48

A story so captivating that I can't put the book down and one that challenges my brain cells!

Jackisback · 01/08/2017 17:23

I like to be kept guessing, but have the reveal be one that makes sense with hindsight. Too obvious and the enjoyment is clearly spoilt! But ridiculous twists and turns make me put the book down sharpish!

becskiboo · 01/08/2017 18:48

Being lead so far down one path that you are sure you know how it is going to end before - boom! Huge u-turn that turns everything on it's head.

daydreambeliever21 · 02/08/2017 14:50

A good thriller has to be totally unpredictable. I'm a terrible "peeper" so for me, I know it's a good thriller when I'm fighting the urge to peep ahead because I can't cope with not knowing how it will turn out.

user1485629191 · 03/08/2017 09:45

A good thriller for me means, simply, that I can't wait to turn the page to find out what happens next, it is keeping me in suspense and second guessing all the time.

giddyypixie · 03/08/2017 13:51

The kind of book where you can barely finish the page because of the anticipation, the one where you go to sleep at 1am (when your normal bed time is 9pm!) and that book that almost makes you relieved when you finished reading it!

hellymart · 03/08/2017 18:17

Tension, from page one, so that you have to keep turning the page! I love it when I can't put a book down and race through it to the end! (and then I have 'book bereavement' when it's finished). I don't mind the odd twist as long as its credible. Anything that's too far-fetched puts me off the book. I also like a strong and beliveable main character that I can really root for.

millililli · 04/08/2017 08:37

Pace, plot and petrified people!

Crumblevision · 04/08/2017 08:47

I like thrillers that are a little bit different. Plot twists that you don't see coming. Many thrillers on the market at the moment seem to be formulaic, and blend in to one another. Good writing is also important; many seem to be "wordy" just for the hell of it. Finally, for me, the mark of a good thriller is not being able to put it down until finished.

RockingDuck · 04/08/2017 10:01

A great thriller is a book that grips you by the heart and keeps you thinking and guessing, with interesting and flawed 'human' characters you care about, building to a gobsmacking climax.

The sign of a great thriller is my slowing down reading towards the end... as I don't want to finish

choccieluvva · 04/08/2017 14:20

a story that thrills you from the beginning with lots of twists and turns and no idea who or what the end of the story is
