Nearly finished this and dying to talk about it. Anyone read it?

I've just finished it. I loved the first third or so and then found the rest of it less engaging. I'm not sure I followed everything - I couldn't quite work out why most of the action was taking place in Moldova and how the whole war suddenly seemed to be at war. Anyway.

I thought the framing device was very entertaining, though not convincing, as the stuff set in the present day was clearly written by someone who knows about how people talk and interact in the present day and not by someone 5,000 years in the future.
