I'm struggling with this. The 'action' scenes are quite good but I'm struggling to picture it in my head and I pick it up to read it to find complete scenes I haven't taken in and must have switched off while I was reading. Is it worth persevering? I'm reading it for my reading group and from what Goodreads says I feel I should be getting some kind of subliminal message about humans from it! Thanks.

It is really worth reading! It starts off feeling a bit weird but I got oddly attached to the characters. There is a pretty good message about not accepting the cards you are dealt and fighting for what you want. I didn't get any sort of weird subliminal message though.Stick with it if you can I think it takes hitting about a quarter of the way in for it get unputdownable for me.

Thank you. I am about 30% through now and am going to persevere. I do like Flora and her determination to be more than 'just a worker bee'.

Yes, I enjoyed it. Makes the life of a bee sound pretty gruesome, though!

There was a bee in the bathroom this morning. Made me think a bit differently and managed to get it safely out the window! Not that I'd have killed it before though. Maybe they should write a similar book about spiders as I don't mind killing them!

I felt the same way! I couldn't get into it at all and felt like it just repeated itself a lot. However, we did it in my book club and it was 50:50 split in terms of opinions. I do think it got better towards the end but for me it wasn't worthy of the buzz ;-)

Some of the action scenes seem to come out of nowhere and I'm not sure if that's me switching off or she's just filling it out with mumbo jumbo. I reckon half of my book club won't have persevered with it.

Loving the pun btw!

I didn't enjoy it. We also read for book club and I felt that whilst the main character was convincing the other insects weren't as real. I was disappointed overall.

Haha. I kind of felt like she just read a science book about what bees do and then just built a story around that - rather than worry too much about character development etc. I know there only bees but still...

*they are

myusernameisnotmyusername · 18/06/2017 19:51

No I agree. Some of it is so far fetched that's why I zone out!

I thought it was immensely clever and well thought out but it was very repetitive. Could have done with a bit of trimming.
