Talk to me about audio books

I'm doing the 2017 Pop Sugar reading challenge and one of the challenge prompts is an audiobook.

My only experience with audiobooks is the Disney books on cd bought for DS for car journeys. We lasted 4 minutes.

Where do I start?

Your local library is probably the best place - they may have CD audiobooks you can borrow. There may also be a system to get them via your phone or tablet.

If you don't mind paying then have a look at Audible. Buying through there is expensive without a membership, but there's usually a free trial if you haven't been a member before.

I can borrow audio books via the Overdrive app from our local library. The only down side to that really is that they take up a lot of space on my phone. But you could always download from there onto an iPod instead. There is a good selection to choose from, but not all libraries do them. Definitely worth having a look at your county library website first. I did that for a long time before having my Audible subscription.

Thanks for your suggestions. Our library did have audiobooks on overdrive but recently moved to cloud library and doesn't have them. Didn't think to go into our local library as DS has just been bought some new books and I'm more of an ebook reader. Will visit the library next weekend.

YouTube has a decent selection of audio books as well. I found all the light we cannot see, me before you, 13 reasons why in German, us, in German no fault In our stars and Alaska and quite a few others available on YouTube. There were a lot of horror and mystery books but I don't like those so much.

The girl on the train and go on girl were available on YouTube in audiobook format if you haven't read them. Girl on the train was quite good. I have not read gone girl though.

Also, you could try Librivox. The website has loads of books for free. They are classics out of copyright and read by volunteers, so the quality of narration can be variable (but some are as good as professional). Also you can get them vua iTunes.

Downloading a couple of shorter podcasts might be a good starter to ebooks. Plus they're free.
