Is anyone reading Seveneves by Neal Stephenson?

I really like his books, I love all that techie stuff. I was wondering about the physics of this book though. The whole white sky/hard rain thing seems to happen incredibly quickly and be more severe than seems probable to my mind. But I'm not a physicist so I was wondering if anybody who understands astrophysics has read it and thinks it is a logical outcome given the starting position of the moon being shattered into seven pieces.

I read it a while ago but that part made sense to me. IIRC it took several years, long enough for the preparations including the habitat in orbit around Earth.
