Ellbell, I must confess I've never read slapater
I do like Magris though, and I'd suggest also Enzo Bettiza's Esilio (I'm not a 100% convinced about this, past some parts of his childhood in spalato are amazing).
As I said, I also love Jo seph Roth and Elias Canetti (la lingua salvata, sorry I don't know the english title)

Ciao bella...

Oh, you must read Il mio Carso. (It's all a bit mad, and very poetic and definitely not to everyone's taste - OK, not to anyone's taste, except mine! - but really great. He was only about 26 when he died. Tragic.)

I teach a course on Triestine literature (perhaps I've already told you that), so I love all this Mitteleuropean stuff. I also like Magris (who is also the most incredibly charismatic man... I've heard him speak a couple of times and was even introduced to him once... [boasting emoticon]) and Tomizza. I haven't read Esilio, but I've read Bettiza's Il fantasma di Trieste, which is good. Oh, and I really like Franco Vegliani's La frontiera....

I think I've read that Canetti (in English) but I can't remember the title. Read it when I was in hospital having (or, rather, waiting to have) dd1. I was there a long time, and read a LOT of books!

Ooh! I've never had my name quite so prominently in a thread title before. How exciting!!!!

Introduced to Magris... [impressed emoticon]!
I'll definetely put il mio carso and la frontiera on my to read list.
oh, the joys of mn!

The Canetti book is called The Tongue Set Free in English.

The Vegliani is set in Istria/Dalmatia, but it is very much bound up with the whole Austro-Hungarian history of the area.

Enjoy!
