Dh has a wish list of books , most of which I have ordered for him. I'd love to get him one that he doesn't know about as he seems to know every single one of his christmas presents so far. He likes historical non fiction/ fiction , Cormac Maccarthy books , Stephen King , James Ellroy. He also really liked My Bloody Project , nominated for the Man Booker prize. Any ideas would be gratefully received as these are not my sort of books at all. Tia

CJ Sansom's Shardlake books
Burial Rites
Maybe The Luminaries, but it's stupidly long and the ending is v silly (imvho)

Is there a particular time/place he's especially interested in, historically?

Thanks so much , I'll have a look at those. He's interested in the Tudors , WW2 and the Roman Empire . I'm sure a lot more but those are the parts I've picked up on anyway.

Definitely CJ Sansom if interested in the Tudors.

WW2 - HHhH
Philip Kerr - Berlin Noir (first three of a longer series)

Thanks a million I've ordered the first three of the C J Sansom books. Fingers crossed he hasn't read them , they sound right up his street . Cheers!

Hope he likes them. :)

Non fiction history - a bit heavy, but I really enjoyed it
The English and Their History by Robert Tombs
Tudor detective/crime - Martyr by Rory Clements ( no 1 in a series)
American crime - Michael Connolly and James Lee Burke are good
one really good thriller - I Am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes

hah a bit late, but C J Sansom is great :)

Thanks bookbook I'll definitely get twitchy again so I'll look those up too . This is why I love Mumsnet , god only knows what I would have chosen myself

It's not a new book but I am reading it at the moment and really enjoying it: London: a biography by Peter Ackroyd

SwedishEdith · 12/12/2016 21:11

Philip Roth - The Plot Against America. Brilliant and frightening.

GooseFriend · 12/12/2016 21:12

The Sisters Brothers - Patrick DeWitt!

SleightOfMind · 12/12/2016 21:31

If he's interested in the Roman Empire, Colleen McCollough's Masters of Rome Series are a must.
Exhaustively researched but written like an epic work of fiction. So good. I'm jealous of anyone who hasn't read them yet!

thegirlinthecar · 12/12/2016 22:31

Thank you all . I've ordered far too many of these . You won't get any credit , I'll tell him I chose them all Grin

The Key to Rebecca by Ken Follett. In fact anything by Follett.

SatsukiKusakabe · 13/12/2016 14:42

Oh if he likes Rome what about the Cicero Trilogy by Robert Harris? Lustrum, Imperium, Dictator.

thegirlinthecar · 13/12/2016 15:07

Thanks everyone ! satsuki he's just finished those , thank you

I know you're probably done for ideas for next Christmas as well now, but thought I'd also throw in the Flashman books if he hasn't got to those yet, my dh loves them as a bit of fun.
