homoerotic subtext in harry potter?

was discussing new HP book with sister and she said there is a strong homoerotic subtext between lupin and snape (esp. in prisoner of azkaban) and between lupin and sirius. I initally thought WTF - but is an interesting idea.

NO - Snape is mine!!!! When he is triumphantly vindicated in the last book he's coming to carry me away from my humdrum existence....

Seriously, remember that HP is just an updated 50's school story, and there was always an homerotic subtext in those. Think of the Chalet School, or all those play up, play up and play the game boys stories like Fifth Form at St Dominic's....

I larfed my tiny wee head off when someone pointed out to me that in the opening scene of (I think) Prisoner of Azkaban, teenage Harry is under the covers in bed playing with his wand!

Ooh yes we talked about this on that huge thread didn't we? I believe the conclusions were as follows:
Sirius was clearly in love with James Potter, James was probably bi but never got further than leading Sirius on, settled for Lily as a trophy wife instead. Snape's straight and has never gotten over his love for Lily, hence hatred of James. Think Lupin's probably straight but disliked Sirius a bit for being such an incubus re James.

bucketsofdynamite - i find this very disturbing, but with a huge grain of truth. although i do think if anyone is gay, it's lucius malfoy - he's as closet as they come and his supressed sexuality makes him a nasty man.

incidentally, interview with dan radcliffe in the observer today. rather disconcerting and i feel like a nasty dirty old woman.

homosexuality is probably frowned upon in pureblood circles as it would very rarely end in procreation, thereby finishing the line. Lucius is as camp as a tent peg, he just has to hide his true sexuality. he's ashamed of his urges and cannot act on them, which is why he's so vile to everyone. repressssssed!

snape, of course is incredibly macho.

I don't think it's Harry Potter per se, I think it's just Alan Rickman oozing sex all over the place

I don't think JKR is capable of subtext tbh. Nice rollicking children's books, but pretty basic IMO.

lol, well all those fanfic ships can't be wrong! Harry and draco will get it together, Sirius and Lupin of course, Snape is doing Hermione (often with Lucius thrown in) and Ron.....well Ron seems to end up wandering around saying 'bloody hell' lots.
