A place called Winter

By Patrick Gale, have just finished it and feel a bit bereft. I read quite a few of his novels a few years ago and found this in a charity shop recently and had forgotten how good he is
It is a while since i had a book that i couldnt stop reading

I've got that sat on my kindle. Haven't read any of his before. Might bump it up the list a bit!

I read that recently and loved it. I wanted to try other stuff by him, any recommendations?

It's a wonderful book although quite harrowing in parts. When I finished reading it I pondered on it for days before I felt that I could start another novel - daft!
Have you read 'A Perfectly Good Man'? Another brilliant one of his.
I know Patrick Gale a little bit - he lives not far away and we play in orchestras together quite often. Lovely, quiet, unassuming man.

I have read quite a lot of his and always enjoyed them but A place called winter really blew me away and then to read the story of why he wrote it was fascinating

I've just bought this today - despite having pledged not to buy any books this year.

Was just mooching in Foyles and there it was.....

Mostly because I love Patrick Gayle's writing and always look to see if there's anything I haven't read.

His writing is just so elegant......

As well as eloquent.

I finished this just yesterday and cried, and I miss the main character already. I also found parts of it very difficult to read and very sad, but it was a marvellous book. I found it took me ages to get into and a bit timid to start, like he was finding his feet and fleshing out the characters but by the end I was hooked.
I live reasonably close to the author too Chickoletta although I don't know him - I didn't realise he was local when I bought the book.

Read this a few months a go it's a great book, very engaging but at times unbearably sad story. The only other one of his I've read is Notes from an Exhibition which was years ago but has stuck in my mind (unusual for me!). Must give some others a go, any recommendations?

Finished this yesterday and like others feel quite bereft.

It took me a while to get into it and the style wasn't really like his other books. But I think that was because he wrote it so successfully within the style of the period he was describing.

It's made me want to learn more about the Canadian settlement and the bibliography is interesting.

It was a shock to see the photograph of his grandfather because it looked so like the picture of Harry I had in my mind while I was reading.

A very rich read.

Yep, just read this on holiday and loved it. I have every one of his books, my favourite is Notes from an exhibition.

Superb book. Absolutely brilliant.

Loved this book. My husband read it after me and we both agreed that is was the best read we had for quite a time. Never read any of his books before but am going to now.
