Sorry for my late reply, just this minute finished the book & I really really enjoyed it! Yes the missing person wasn't one who generated too much sympathy but I did enjoy Manon's tale as it wove through the case. I took the view that this was probably the first of many books about the Cambridgeshire team?? (Although maybe not by the time the story had concluded).
Thrilled to bits to receive a copy, thank you!

Loved it, loved it. Thank you so much for a tremendous read.

It took me longer than normal to read this thriller because it didn't grip me that much. The missing person story was too slow and there was no sense of urgency in the plot developments. I didn't really like the ending and the story about Fly was very far fetched.

Having said that, I did really enjoy the descriptions and the characters, it was funny in parts, and I think Susie Steiner is a very good writer so I would read her books again.

I liked it but didn't love it, and like Xmasbaby11 it took me longer than it usually would because it was too 'putdownable'. I liked Manon as a character and some of her dialogue, but felt it was too meandering so lost focus, also didn't really have sympathy with the missing person which didn't help draw me in.

Sorry for the late addition here! I have just finished it too (thanks to an enormous pile of others I had to get through for my book club)

Thanks firstly to MN and the publishers - I rarely win anything, so it was a lovely surprise in itself!

The story gripped me. The characters, I felt, were quite realistic, quite human, not neccessarily likeable but believable. I liked the quite modern dialogue (I've just been ploughing through endless historical novels so this was very welcome) I didn't particularly like the way the characters skipped about and I had to check back as to who it was meant to be about on occasion. Overall though I thought it was a good read, I enjoyed the ending and would recommend it.

Thanks again!

Missing presumed its a great read. I liked the way that story is told by different characters, from their prespective. Very unpredictable ending. Highly recommended!

Thanks for my copy of the book. My biggest bugbear with this book was the use of the phrase 72 hours to find her... on the cover which gave me the impression it was going to be a fast paced story alas it was anything but. It was slow and dragged on, there were whole sections and characters that brought little or nothing to the story and thus should have been excluded. It just felt like the author had taken information from various real life criminal cases featured in the newspaper in the last few years and incorporated them into a story. The character were very formulaic and I soon got bored; I'm sorry I didn't stop halfway through as it didn't get any better and the outcome was ridiculous.

I usually don't read thrillers; I'm more of a historical book fan, but I thoroughly enjoyed this read and would probably read it again some time in the future.

tropicalfish · 15/11/2016 22:14

I enjoyed reading this book and unusually for a detective book it had a lot of warmth and sympathy between the different characters and is narrated from not just the prime character's point of view. I would never have pre-guessed the plot twists at all. Thank you for the copy of the book.

Radley1 · 21/11/2016 06:50

Thank you for my copy I really enjoyed it . D C Manon is a real rough and ready character which gives a air of reality to the story. I did think the ending was predictable and would have preferred more twists but on the whole bring on more the same .It was a good read

MooseyMoo · 21/11/2016 16:52

Thanks for my copy and sorry this is so late. I had only just started a new book when this arrived.

I love thrillers and couldn't wait to start. I found it quite slow paced and thought there would be more action in the first 72 hours.

It was pretty predictable and not enough plot twists for me. I wasn't keen on the different relationships and found every chapter changing to a different character annoying. An ok read but unfortunately not for me and wouldn't recommend to buy.

agnapoop · 14/12/2016 21:02

I found this quite slow to begin with but soon got caught up in the plot and the characters. I would recommend this book, it was enjoyable but not a riveting read.

sarahsusannah · 15/12/2016 15:47

Very late addition - sorry; have been thinking about the book for a while. I like the way Susie Steiner writes and I loved Manon (great name!) but I agree with some of the earlier comments that the stuff about her love life was a distraction from the main drive of the mystery/police narrative. A pity, as the author has clearly done thorough research. I would read another of her books but in an ideal world would like to see a stronger crime story and less about the personal life of the police characters. But I did enjoy it, and thank you, Mumsnet, for sending me a copy.

Susangilley7 · 15/12/2016 17:07

Loved, loved this book. Thank you

Liska · 03/06/2017 18:57

Really really late addition! This one got missed in my to read pile! But it was definitely worth the wait. It’s nuanced, and not a classic 'whodunit' - and that made it a more interesting read. It's definitely more Val McDermid than Agatha Christie! Personally, I really enjoyed the Manon sections, and would love to read more titles with her as the protagonist.
