Loathing "Crime and Punishment"

I didn't much like "The Idiot," but it in no way prepared me for how much I hate "C&P." Could any fans explain to me what they like about it? It might have been interesting if the main character had been an intelligent, kind, upright citizen and the story was following his deterioration. But here the character is already rather unhinged to begin with, along with being a thoroughly unpleasant person.
The worst of it is that I was waylaid after about 300+ pages, and by the time I came back to the book a few weeks later, I'd forgotten much of it, but I absolutely refused to start again. I can't wait until I'm done with it.

I read it in Russian as part of my degree. a very long time ago

There are certainly better examples of Russian literature.

Leave it.
After always finishing any book I picked up, I've recently stopped reading books books I'm not enjoying by page 100. It's very liberating - life's too short.

If the character was more normalto start with he probably wouldn't have committed the crime in the first place and there would be no story. I thought the plot was OK but wasn't too keen on the writing. Never have been with any Russian writer though. I don't regret reading though as it does raise some morality questions.

But if he's unhinged and unpleasant to begin with, there's no story! Because it's certainly not like a detective story, where the plot is the pursuit.

Fatowl, I agree, and it was a big deal for me the first time I ever stopped a book. I was reading my third Grisham and thought, What the hell - this is boring and he's a bad writer. But it's different for me with "littra-chure." I feel I have to give it more of a chance.

Mmm... this is not Hollywood, not everything has to be black and white. And I think it all makes once (If?) You get to the end. I can see why you wouldn't though. The writing can be really tedious I find.
