I'm sure this has been done to death but...what age for ASOIAF

DD, (14 and a bit) is pestering me to borrow my Song of Ice and Fire books. I'd never let her watch Game of Thrones on the telly, but I'm torn on the books because she's reading some very unchallenging books at the moment, when I can persuade her to read at all, and ASOIAF, whilst not exactly Austen, would be a big meaty compelling read with the thrill of the forbidden.

At her age I was reading James Herbert, Flowers in the Attic and Emmanuelle of course. But there are some genuinely awful bits in the later books, which I kind of wish I hadn't read.....

What do you reckon?

I wouldn't stop her reading anything, tbh, though I might read something that might be disturbing at the same time, so that we could talk about it.

I agree, at that age I was reading James Herbert, but I've only read the first two books in this series.

To be fair, at 14, there's nothing stopping her going to the library and taking out whatever book she wants and reading it without your knowledge. It's better that you know if she's going to be reading some disturbing things so you can talk about them. I read some terribly inappropriate books (pinched from my much older sister) far too young and never spoke about it, probably would have helped to get some things straight in my head if I had someone to talk to.

I got addicted to Stephen King at 14! Started with Carrie, and haven't stopped reading him, and a shed load of every genre since. Yes, definitely encourage her to read ASOI&F. I work in a High School, teach KS4 lit actually. The curriculum covers a lot of potentially contentious stuff. A lot of the students have read the series at home, and too many have watched it!
