Books with "a really good story" for 13-year-old DD

Looking for some holiday reading recommendations for DD who has recently turned 13. She doesn't particularly go for sci-fi type stuff, but other than that she doesn't have strong views about genre, but says that the key thing she wants is "a really good story". Any recommendations?

Virals series by Kathy Reichs main characters are a bunch of teenagers.

DD is really enjoying Malorie Blackman's "Noughts and Crosses" series.

Personally I suggest the Tiffancy Aching books by Terry Pratchett, starting with "Wee Free Men".

Sarah Crossan is brilliant, imo. Try 'Apple and Rain'.

Riyria Revelations series by Michael J. Sullivan. Fantasy- swords and sorcery. I believe he was inspired to write the series for his daughter of a similar age.

First two books in one volume

The Ivy Tree by Mary Stewart is amazing. Don't be put off by the dreadful cover. It's a great story to read at that age (or any age.)

I'd look at Daphne du Maurier, too. She could also read issue-led books by Jodie Picoult or you could introduce her to Marian Keyes.

The Woman in White?

Parallel trilogy by Christine Kersey is a brill read. Even though it's sci-fi, it's a lot more as well, basically a runaway story.
The first book('Gone') is free on google books, so she can give it a try.

At that age my DD loved The Spook's apprentice books by Joseph Delaney and the InChronicles by Helen Dunmore. She also liked the Windsinger Triology by William Nicholson.

I second anything pratchett, was definitely around 13 when I got in to all those!

Our book club just read The Lie Tree - has she read it? It's crossover teen/adult and we all loved it - gripping story. The author's written a few, I haven't read the others though.

Has she read Jane Eyre?

It's a bit young, but for sheer plot value the first series of Percy Jackson books are unbeatable.

At 13 she could start on Agatha Christie, or Georgette Heyer. Rebecca is worth a try. Slightly off the wall suggestion - one of the most riveting books I've ever read that has no questionable content (barring a dead cat) is Rogue Male by Geoffrey Household.

The wind singer

That's Frances Hardinge annandale. She's brilliant. Haven't read Lie Tree yet but Fly By Night is fabulous.

Ooh she's a great age for Flambards? The whole four books are good but it's the fourth one that pulls it down to good, the first two are AMAZING.

It was reading the title Fly by night that made me think of K M Peyton. I love all her books.

Philip Pullman's Ruby In The Smoke (Sally Lockhart) and Dark Materials series are exceptional. One of my favourite books ever and a terrific story is Pat O'Shea's Hounds Of The Morrigan. Summer Of My German Soldier by Bette Green is excellent. I also loved The Diddakoi by Rumer Godden at that age.

Has she read Wonder? In bed so don't have author to hand but lovely story.
