The Big Read 2003 - Top 100

Anyone remember this? I'm planning on working through the top 100 excluding the ones I've read unless I desperately want to re-read them again! Might be an idea for anyone else looking for a new challenge!

I did this. I started in 2003 when it was first released. My children were 9 and 7 at the time and I realised I needed to start stretching myself again after nine years of ploughing through three pages of chick-lit before falling asleep. It introduced me to some things I'd never have read, with some writers becoming firm favourites and some being banished from my to-read list forever. It took a long time but it was a great sense of satisfaction at the end. Good luck with it.

Broker how long did it take you? There is actually a top 200 but that would take a lifetime! Here is the link for the list -

Just looked at the top 100 and I've already read 30, plus there's another three or so that I've started but never finished. Quite a few of the others are on my to read pile so may start with them.

I've read 67 of them
Might try the other 33, although I don't quite fancy Jacqueline Wilson as DD reads them

Sounds like a good idea but I've already read 80 and the ones I haven't are mostly the Jacqueline Wilson and Terry Pratchett plus a couple of things like The Shellseekers which I don't really fancy. Could try Terry P.

I don't particularly fancy the Jacqueline Wilson ones either but I want to do it properly and they should be an easy and quick read - I've actually just finished studying a children's literature course for my English language and literature degree and Jacqueline Wilson featured in it quite regularly (not her books per se, more her opinion on children's literature and being an author for children generally).

You have to read Terry Pratchett disappoint. It's an absolute literature necessity

My DH loves Terry Pratchett, I'm not a fan at all. I've read a couple of the disc world novels but not my kind of thing really.

I've just downloaded the first Discworld book and the first Dune book so will try them next. I have read some Jacqueline Wilson when my kids were younger and I don't suppose they'd take very long!

I don't think you have to read the discworld novels in order - in fact DH (as a TP lover) actively recommended me not to read the colour of magic first as it might put me off the rest. I have read and did enjoy Mort as a nice introduction to TP.

That sort of out of order thing worries me!

Sorry InsaneDame I've just seen this. In all it took about three years. I had read around 35 already and didn't re-read those, so sixty odd books. I did read a few books in that time that weren't on the list, that I'd received as gifts etc. but pretty much full on for three years.
