Just finished reading this
I'm mystified not just by the rave reviews but also by the descriptions of the book
It isn't horror or terror, even the most subtle elements of either of those are missing

Hurley writes beautifully so I did skim read to the end but nearly abandoned it half way through

There's loads of setting up of potentially creepy stuff but then nothing happens really and it's hard to care much for any of the characters

Largely a non story. Anyone else find this?

It's our next book group choice so I'm interested to hear this. Can't say I feel drawn to it, but we'll see!

I did feel drawn to it...heard good things from friends as well as the reviews etc. Do post again when you've read it, I'll keep this on watch. I always think I've missed something when I feel like this, especially as the book was well written.

We read it for book club and I was really disappointed by it. There is some great descriptive writing but I just thought it didn't know quite what it wanted to be. I was waiting to be scared and just wasn't and by the end was quite let down by the hype. There are good moments but just not enough.

I've just finished this. I wanted something really gripping to take my mind off the EU Ref when I'm trying to get to sleep.

I did find it atmospheric and beautifully written - in parts. I thought the sections about being an altar boy were great. Those parts could have made a good short story.

But the plot was terrible and I lost interest. Towards the end I literally did not know what was going on.

I found it very confusing, some of it was very good but I just didn't get where it was going
