cold comfort farm. its hilarious and there are lots of lovely little nuances. camus is all very well if you all want to sit around and stroke your beards.

bakedpotato · 09/01/2007 11:59

ccf

JackieNo · 09/01/2007 12:01

Cold comfort farm, definitely.

beckybrastraps · 09/01/2007 12:02

Definitely agree with pesme.

KathyMCMLXXII · 09/01/2007 12:04

ccf, no question.

MrsBadger · 09/01/2007 12:04

ccf

more fun

The Camus might make me seem a bit of a smart alec (I'm already known for my opinions and dislikes - I haven't rated many of the previous books chosen, and my last choice -a Patrick Gale- wasn't much liked either ! I do love ccf though, and I do genuinely like the Camus as I read it at 16 and it stayed with me....mmmmmmm

I loved the outsider as a misunderstood teenager (didn't we all!) but if your book group is anything like mine ccf would definitely go down better. Actually thinking of it, it is quite a good idea...

clerkKent · 09/01/2007 12:18

I'm not in a book group, but dw is. She is looking for a more intellectual group, but with the current bunch it would have to be ccf - many would not enjoy L'Etranger.

Marina · 09/01/2007 12:21

Cold Comfort Farm is just what you need in dull grey January.
L'Etranger should only be read in warm sunshine IMO

funnypeculiar · 09/01/2007 12:33

CCF every time. Esp as (imho) too few good book club books have any sense of humour...

cazzybabs · 09/01/2007 12:35

CCF - I love it. Never tire of reading it!

bundle · 09/01/2007 12:42

found CCF a bit disappointing but would definitely choose it over Camus!

3rdTriMossTer · 09/01/2007 12:52

CCF. Unless you're the type of book club where black polo necks are de rigueur!

beckybrastraps · 09/01/2007 13:52

LOL at clerkKent. We must be more like the less intellectual current bunch then. Although of course we all love Camus

EmmyLou · 09/01/2007 14:05

Marina - I will quote you at my next reading group meeting. We've had Cold Comfort farm on our potential-to-read list for a while now and after We Need to talk About Kevin and then Wuthering Heights (Feb) it just might be the thing for March.

binker · 09/01/2007 14:28

It certainly looks as though you reckon ccf is the one - Marina, you're right about it needing to be read in the sun - I read it at 16 first in SW France during a hot summer (in English mind !) and I love the descriptions of the heat in Algiers...
I think they'd like ccf - we've had a pretty mixed bunch of books, the very worst being The Alchemist - total shite.
