DS's Year 8 school reading project this year is to read books from or about every continent (or any country within a continent, or by an author from that continent), in English or translated into English. He is aiming to read two in every case. Any suggestions for South America, Antarctica, Africa, Australasia to suit a 12 year old boy?

When I was younger, I remember enjoying a series of books by Maurice Gee, a New Zealand author, if that's any help.

Isobel Allende (originally from Chile) has written a really good series set in the Amazon Rainforest. The first one is called "City Of The Beasts" and is a very exciting read, perfect for age about 12 to adult.
