Its ancestors are Jane Eyre (quite openly) Turn of the Screw (a bit more subtly) and Possession - but it is for all that entirely its own original self, and I've been living in it since clever acute dh gave it me yesterday. Read it as soon as you can.

Bink - I finished it a couple of days ago and thought it was fantastic. Haven't had the heart to pick anything else up as have that good book hangover where you know everything else is going to be a real disappointment.

And you're right -despite its obvious references, it is quite original in its story/plot.
