Following on from the other thread, which books did you hate with a passion? I'll start with The Accidental by Ali Smith, and also Mr Golightly's Holiday by Sally Vickers. Both appallingly awful books, IMO. Next...

The Stone Diaries by Carol Shields

ItalianJob · 21/12/2006 20:20

Mill on the Floss (though possibly it improved after page 100, I didn't stick around to find out)

Oh and the latest Paolo Coehlo one, the Zahir.

thewoodlandfairy · 21/12/2006 20:24

stone diaries - yes not good, but i loved her other stuff. LArry's party - i think it was called, about a guy who designed mazes was pretty bad too.

multitasker · 21/12/2006 20:25

Jodi Picoult Plain Truth - won't read any more of hers.
Tha Da Vinci code wasn't great either.

thankyoupoppetunderthetree · 21/12/2006 20:33

lolita;
can't get the creeps voice out of my head whenever I am reminded of it. HAD to read till the end though. yuk.

(Just finished Birdsong, sebastian falks, as recomended by someone on the other thread; best book I have ever read, I think I could start it again right now.)

ItalianJob · 21/12/2006 20:36

oh yes the Da Vinci Code - 600 sodding pages, thought it was never going to end, and all that bleating about "the sacred feminine"

controlfreakyturkeyandstuffing · 21/12/2006 20:38

maggie farrell who everyone was raving about.... cant even nb title..... crapola

morningpaper · 21/12/2006 20:41

Victoria Hislop, The Island

Just terribly written

ItalianJob · 21/12/2006 20:45

Mason and Dixon by Thomas Pynchon. He's terribly critically acclaimed, meant to be a great American writer or something too. I've ovviously got no taste

christie1 · 21/12/2006 20:58

I hated stone diaries too. I was sooo disappointed. First few chapters, fab, then dull, dull dull. for any martha grimes fans (richard jury series) don't bother her latest. Absolutely horrible. It is almost like she didn't proofread it and her editor didn't bother either.

MrsSpoon · 21/12/2006 21:01

The Da Vinci Code in number one place, followed by The Accidental by Ali Smith, then On Beauty by Zadie Smith.

hoxtonchick · 21/12/2006 21:01

glamourama by brett easton ellis. dreadful.

whatwouldjesusdo · 21/12/2006 21:16

Perfume.

I hate this book. Pretentious, boring, pseudo-intellectual attempt to be meaningful. The f***g pigeon was even worse.

Notquitesotiredmum · 21/12/2006 21:17

Carl Hiassen - Skinny Dip. Really really didn't get why anyone would want to keep on reading after the first couple of chapters. You find out who did it and what they did on page one, and then spend the rest of the book waiting to see what will happen to characters you really don't like or care about.

expatinscotland · 21/12/2006 21:28

We Need to Talk about Kevin

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 21/12/2006 21:29

Angels and Demons

expatinscotland · 23/12/2006 00:05

At least, MIL stopped giving me all those romance novels.

Although, now's the time I need them. Thinking of going back to penning that sort of schlock. It's fun, it's easy and it sells.

choosyfloosy · 23/12/2006 00:08

My Little Blue Dress by ... erm... have blocked it out. That's 4 hours of my life I'll never get back.

TwoIfBySanta · 23/12/2006 18:32

We Need To Talk About Kevin...no we don't, the worst written book I have ever had to read.

The Little Friend by Donna Tartt, also known as the no real plot.

So far most chic lit books with the exception of Marian Keyes of course.

There are a lot of books I begin, don't get past the first chapter due to its utter sh*teousness and then forget completely about it, blocking out the memory.

christmosschops30 · 23/12/2006 18:40

Gods Callgirl by Carla Van Ray

Thought a book about a woman who went from nun to prostitute would make good reading ...sadly not, I wanted to poke my own eyes out by the end of it

christmosschops30 · 23/12/2006 18:41

morningpaper I am reading that at the moment and loving it!

HowTheFillyjonkStoleChristmas · 23/12/2006 18:53

unless by carol ann duffy

it was ok for a bit in the middle but really i got to the end and thought, what was the point of that, then?

oh and all jane austin ever written. anaemic laydees sitting around drinking tea and bitching in frou frou dresses. so not my cup of tea. thank feck for feminism.

twoisenoughmum · 23/12/2006 18:59

Oh this is SOOOOOOOO frustrating. Read the thread title and instantly knew I HAD to post because there is a particular book I hated with a passion. And someone's already got there before me!!!

Anyway, may I just add my (considerable weight) to whatwouldjesusdo's nomination - PERFUME by Patrick Suskind. Absolute twaddle.

HowTheFillyjonkStoleChristmas · 23/12/2006 19:01

i have very mixed feelings about perfume

i liked the first and middle parts a LOT

but then it went crappy
