So far, I have loved The Paying Guests, Christmas Carol (narrated by Tom Baker), Pompeii by Robert Harris. Also non-fiction Pompeii by Mary Beard and Born to Run. HATED Harry Quebert affair as badly-written, sexist tripe and also a cheapy Northanger Abbey download with a really clangy narration- should have forked out for the Juliet Stevenson narration. Wondering what next and any alternative sites to Amazon/audible?

Thank you Grifone Flowers

Grifone · 09/04/2016 07:36

Apple Tree Yard by Louise Doughty is today's DD at £1.99. I think Moving has recommended it in the past.

Movingonmymind · 09/04/2016 15:43

Yes, a very gripping reading. And well narrated, Juliet Stephneson, from memory.

There's a 2 for 1 credit deal on Audible starting today. Just bought four books with my last two credits - two William Boyds and two Sebastian Faulks.

whatamidoinghereanyway · 13/04/2016 18:15

I'm currently listening to The Lie Tree...I love it. I think the audience is young adult but it's a captivating story right from the word go and read by Emilia Fox.

Bought Apple Tree Yard in the Daily Deal so that's next!

Today's deal is Margaret Attwood The Heart goes last, I would have bought it if I hadn't already read the book.

whatamidoinghereanyway · 14/04/2016 13:13

Just used my credit to get 2 books on the buy one get one free on British authors Smile

The Thread by Victoria hislop and the love song of miss queenie Hennessy by Rachel Joyce. SmileSmileSmile

Greengagesummer · 14/04/2016 16:03

Me again...on holiday & checked MN for the first time today. I have 5 credits but see nothing on the site showing the deal. Can somebody post a link please?

whatamidoinghereanyway · 14/04/2016 19:50

I've just looked and I can't see it Confused, it was definitely there this morning and I'm sure it said available until the 17th. Sad

Grifone · 15/04/2016 08:01

Try the deals tab on the audible page. You should see it there. I cannot link on my phone but I will try to do it later from my laptop. The deal runs until Sunday.

Greengagesummer · 15/04/2016 08:58

Thank you both.

I spent a very frustrating hour with various audible reps who told me to do x, y, z and as soon as it looked like we were getting somewhere, WHAM, I was thrown out of chat and had to restart with a new person.

I checked Deals page & googled first but no sign of it....Could it be due to being abroad?

Grifone · 15/04/2016 13:41

I don't think being abroad should make any difference once you are a member. this is the page:

www.audible.co.uk/sp/2for1/ref=a_hp_tft_travNav?ie=UTF8&pf_rd_r=0N0J9S7E07S4SH65NT2C&pf_rd_m=A2YHV2RYTDNFG3&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=5000&pf_rd_p=888643267&pf_rd_s=top-ftx

whatamidoinghereanyway · 15/04/2016 14:18

I see now why I couldn't link to the deal, it's because it's only available to members with 1 or more credits and I've used all mine now Smile

Is anyone getting today's daily deal, looks a bargain at 1.99. Amy snow by Tracy Rees. The reviews are good...

FireandBrimstone · 15/04/2016 16:33

The best audiobook I've EVER listened to is The Shining. Really atmospherically read, actually scary and the book is fascinating if (like me) you've only ever seen the movie.
I generally only listen to short stories or dip-in-able books as I listen at bedtime and tend to fall asleep! Best ones in that category are any of Caitlin Moran's books.

AKissACuddleAndACheekyFinger · 15/04/2016 16:43

I have audible but I drive a LOT for my job so it's worth the money. I listen to loads but Theo Es that I think are definitely enhanced by being audio rather than reading are The Rosie Project/The Rosie Effect and Room.

I have a couple of friends who started to read the book Room and found it very hard going because of the childish language. However, when narrated by a child (who is fantastic by the way) it makes perfect sense and is absolutely compelling.

Jujuheyhey · 20/04/2016 06:57

Has anyone used the 'return a book' facility on Audible?

MermaidofZennor · 20/04/2016 08:10

Yes I have returned books, not often though. There hasn't been a problem with Audible when I've done so.

Kwirrell · 20/04/2016 08:39

I have returned 4 books in 2 years. Being able to return them so easily is one of the reason why I subscribe. Before I knew of this option, I would plough on with mistakes, getting more irritated befor giving up.

whatamidoinghereanyway · 20/04/2016 14:18

I've returned books too and I'm tempted to return my current one but will plod on as the option to return online isn't there and j can't be bothered to go to online chat Smile

Jujuheyhey · 20/04/2016 15:02

So if you're not enjoying something that's an OK reason to return? Do you just get a replacement credit?

It says it has to be within a year of purchase so that may be why there isn't the option to return online, whatamidoing

MermaidofZennor · 20/04/2016 16:42

It's what Audible says - if you haven't enjoyed it, or there was a problem with it etc. The option to return is in a link from your library on Audible where all your books are stored (main site not app). They just ask you for the reason (select from their list of options) and then give you a refund of credit. But I would imagine if you return too many books they would query that. My reasons have been poor narration or problems with download (skipping).

But in the main I think Audible is very good. I'm currently listening to Engleby by Sebastian Faulks which, so far, is very good.

gailforce1 · 20/04/2016 18:15

Have listened to two gems recently:-

  1. Cakes and Ale by W Somerset Maugham read by James Saxon. I have never read any Maugham and loved this.
  2. Our Zoo by June Mottershead read by Emily Pennant-Rae. The story of how Chester zoo was founded remembered by the youngest member of the Mottershead family.
fatowl · 21/04/2016 16:52

I can recommend the Bernard Cornwell Last Kingdom series on Audible. I read them years ago and remember liking them, and after the recent series on BBC, decided to revisit them - great narrator - Jonathan Keeble , he really takes you there

MermaidofZennor · 21/04/2016 17:33

I finished listening to Engleby by Sebastian Faulks today and thought it was brilliant. Very good narration by Michael Maloney. Still feeling unsettled by the story though.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 21/04/2016 22:16

Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie read by Adjoa Andoh

I loved the story and the narration makes the story come alive brilliantly read
