So far, I have loved The Paying Guests, Christmas Carol (narrated by Tom Baker), Pompeii by Robert Harris. Also non-fiction Pompeii by Mary Beard and Born to Run. HATED Harry Quebert affair as badly-written, sexist tripe and also a cheapy Northanger Abbey download with a really clangy narration- should have forked out for the Juliet Stevenson narration. Wondering what next and any alternative sites to Amazon/audible?

Quog, i know you're on the other thread too, just curious, do you 'read' all your books via audio?

Quogwinkle · 26/02/2016 11:49

No, only some. In fact it's probably only about a quarter, if that. I listen to audio books when at home doing chores, like today (laundry and cooking) or when in the car etc. But never when the DC are at home or even DH - seems a bit rude to stick headphones on when they're about :)

I love a good book and often have an audio book, a book or kindle book (novel) on the go, and maybe something non-fiction too.

What about yourself, moving?

Movingonmymind · 26/02/2016 11:56

Other way round, so mainly audio- while dogwalking, doing chores and last thing at night. Pick up the occasional paperback from library or to read to dc, but much prefer audio as a rule.

And I also tend to have several books on the go Smile Usually a lighter read, a non-fiction or biography and a weightier read for my more alert moments.

I downloaded the Audible app, must have registered some time in the past, so it knew me AND immediately saw the books I had in iTunes so that was easy. Definitely thinking of getting a subscription.

Richard Armitage reading Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: A Novel. Really helped me understand the play, its a brilliant story and he narrates it so well.

Movingonmymind · 26/02/2016 13:51

Ok, just splashed out the required £2.99 for Cloud Atlas.., Shall give DM another go!

Today's daily deal is 1984 by George Orwell. I don't know this recording though. If it was the one recorded by Samuel West I would have recommended it - I borrowed it from the library a couple of years ago and he was a really good narrator.

Movingonmymind · 28/02/2016 15:34

Bugger, I missed it! Seen Samuel West on the stage a couple of times, excellent actor but this narrator was good too, still forgot to order in time though!

I've just listened to my third dud in a row - The Driver's Seat. Most of the story was so boring and Judi Dench's voice didn't suit the dark story.

Quogwinkle · 28/02/2016 16:45

I finished listening to The Year of Living Danishly by Helen Russell and really enjoyed it. A good narrator, despite her mispronouncing of Copenhagen!

Movingonmymind · 29/02/2016 09:53

South, crossfingers for tour next one not being a dud. Am v impressed with Alistair Campbells acutely observed, vaguely autobiographical novel, All in the Mind about a psychiatrist and his patients. Far more entertaining than it sounds! He is excellent at stripping away the pomposity and defences of his characters, some of their experiences are truly humbling. Highly readable, hope he writes more and was never a Campbell fan..

Anyone tempted by today's deal? It is Wuthering Heights read by Patricia Routledge. Will I or won't I Confused?

Quogwinkle · 11/03/2016 16:25

I'd listen to a sample first (she was v good in Alan Bennett's Talking Heads, but I'm not sure she has the right voice for WH). I've got the version read by Michael Kitchen waiting on my iPod.

RaisinGirls · 11/03/2016 17:20

DH and DD are away this weekend. Planning to spend this evening sorting and tidying . Any recommendations for a light hearted feel good type audio book - preferably off audible as I've got some credits there.

Quogwinkle · 11/03/2016 18:24

I used a credit for Sue Perkins's autobiography, Spectacles. That's my listen for next week. Would that fit the bill? I would also recommend Clare Balding's two autobiography books (memory fail - have forgotten the titles but the walking one was really funny).

Quogwinkle · 11/03/2016 18:27

Walking Home by Clare Balding :)

RaisinGirls · 11/03/2016 18:46

Thanks. Just downloaded walking home and seems to be fitting the bill as I potter about the house.

Grifone · 11/03/2016 22:40

Had listened to the sample Quog but am.still undecided. I have an hour and 20 minutes to change my mind ☺

Movingonmymind · 12/03/2016 21:18

Am v tempted by Walking book (though was it on a deal yesterday and i missed it??) . Didnt fsncy her My Family book, kind of annoyed me, but this seems much more like her Ramblings programme which i enjoy.

Quogwinkle · 12/03/2016 21:54

No you haven't missed it on daily deal, Moving - I used a credit for it a while back. It was very good, despite Clare's slightly dodgy attempts at accents :)

Movingonmymind · 13/03/2016 08:38

Thanks, Quog, will probably get it. Anyone finding the deals of the day have been dire of late? Trashy looking books I wouldn't read for free from the library!

Today is 'A Year of Marvellous Ways'...contemplating forking out £2.99, has anyone read or listened to this?

Movingonmymind · 14/03/2016 08:19

Also tempted, intrigued by storyline and good reviews.
