..The Unbearable Lightness of being by Milan Kundera, would any wise mumsnetters have any suggestions for a Christmas book for him? Preferably different author as I'm not sure how much Kundera he's read. He's the tiniest bit of an intellectual snob, but with that well read and thoughtful. Thanks!!

Maybe Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel. Technically it's sci-fi but it's also a beautifully written and elegant story about the human condition.

Haruki Marukami - Kafka on The Shore
Cormac McCarthy - The Road

Anything by Graham Greene, William Boyd (maybe ?) Julian Barnes, Graham Swift, Margaret Atwood, JM Coetzee (e.g.Disgrace).

My DS who likes similar things (by the sounds of it) to your brother also liked it one year when I gave him one of those '100 Best novels of all time' type books.

Karl Ove Knausgard might be worth a try.

If on a Winter's Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino might fit the bill.

If he's interested in a wide range of literature he might find the Reading the Work by Ann Morgan interesting. She read a book from all 196 countries in a year, and had a fascinating time tracking down suitable material from some countries without a strong printed literary tradition. It shows how we tend to read from a very narrow selection of literature - British, Western European and North American.
