Do comparisons put you off

I like a good phychological thriller but I'm sick seeing just about every book compared to The Girl on the Train and Gone Girl. I found TGOTT hugely over rates and I hated TGG. Why is it assumed that constantly comparing it to these is a selling point.

I know what you mean, and I try to avoid any of the comparisons "If you liked that, you'll love this" stuff. Just weak imitations often. I like a good completely different novel.

I'm enjoying the Robert Galbraith/J K Rowling series. Her latest one Career of Evil was excellent. Tony Parsons has started a series too - I read and enjoyed the first one The Murder Bag. Have got the second one on my tbr list. Thought the first one very good. A bit grisly in places, but a gripping read.

The only one that comes to mind is when some silly website tried to assure me that some other writer was just like Jane Austen.

It depends if I enjoyed the book they're comparing it to!

Sometimes it puts me off, if I didn't like the book they are comparing it to.

And sometimes if I really liked the book they are comparing it to, it annoys me because often the new book turns out to be nothing like the first book.
