I read it in secondary school (nearly twenty years ago) in an English lit class.
From what I can remember, there had been a nuclear type bomb and there were few survivors. The book told the story of those survivors and how the army treated them?

I remember one of the survivors had a baby and it was born with no mouth due to the radiation.

Ring any bells?

We read 2 post - nuclear books at shook in the 1980s, but I don't remember a baby without a mouth. Do either of these sound right?

Z for Zachariah - Robert C O'brien
Empty World by John Christopher.

Was it children of dust. I posted on a thread a while back asking a similar question.
