It does get better. You will be gutted when it ends. Stick with it, it's a bit turgid to begin with.

ThatsHowYouGetAnts · 08/11/2015 21:16

It's years since I read it but I remember loving it! I was pregnant with DD and stuck in bed with a fiendish cold. I drank fruit tea with honey and lost myself in that book. I was very sorry to finish it.

firefly78 · 08/11/2015 21:17

I have this book somewhere found it dull maybe I need to give it another try.

MildVirago · 08/11/2015 21:27

I think it's deeply flawed but also very readable - but honestly, I think a lot of it depends on whether you share Richard's fascination with his 'picturesque' Greek classmates and buy into his horror of anything he considers Californian or suburban.

southeastdweller · 08/11/2015 21:37

Read this a few months ago and loved it. You've barely got going so please keep reading a bit more! The story really does get more gripping.

ThursdayLastWeek · 09/11/2015 09:42

Nope. Massive waste of my time Grin

80sWaistcoat · 09/11/2015 09:43

I thought it was awful, kept telling myself it would get better and I think I finished it but if I did it was out of sheer cussedness.

I enjoyed it but I can't remember if that was from the beginning or further in. I think it is a good book though.

JimmyGreavesMoustache · 09/11/2015 12:57

I LOVE this book, but I am pretty sure it got me from the start. definitely wouldn't have considered it a slow burner. pains me to say so, but you should probably ditch it.

nebulae · 09/11/2015 20:17

I'm listening to the audio book at the moment and loving it. It is a slow paced book but I don't mind that in an audio book. I listen to it while I'm pottering round the house, doing housework etc.

Jemimapuddleduk · 09/11/2015 20:20

It's one if the few books i have read twice. I loved it. Stick with it!

Fatfreefaff · 09/11/2015 20:21

Like nebulae I listened to it as an audiobook - same with Goldfinch. I am doing a classics course with the OU now - so I would say I got into it!

YakTriangle · 09/11/2015 20:30

I love that book. Stick with it, it's brilliant.

nebulae · 09/11/2015 21:01

I've just realised I'm on part 28 of 28 of the audio book :(

Now starts the search for another decent audio book.

nothruroad · 09/11/2015 21:42

I love this book, please continue with it.I'm sure you will be completely gripped soon.

IndridCold · 10/11/2015 14:03

Agree with the PPs saying if it hasn't grabbed you by now then forget it, it doesn't really change (although technically you should get to page 68 before giving up Smile.)

I loved it, but was gripped from the beginning.

CrayonShavings · 10/11/2015 14:09

One of my favourite books, but it did take me three attempts. I'd say put it down and try again in 6 months

mumblebumble · 10/11/2015 14:14

I loved it! But from page one from what I remember, so maybe you won't.

jeee · 10/11/2015 14:17

I read it when I was a student. I loved it.

Moving on two decades a few years, I read it again. Couldn't stand it. Every single character was so mind-bogglingly self-absorbed (and yes, I do know that's the point), I wanted to slap them all - hard.

I think it might be one of those books that's meaningful if you read it at the right stage in your life.
