I loved The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. Can anyone recommend similar reads?

That's it really.
I always have several books on the go, but am without a bedtime book right now and this is the kind of book I like to snuggle down with as the weather turns.

So what is along the same lines as this?

Stardust by Neil Gaiman?

Ooh I loved night circus. Mr Penumbra's 24 hour bookstore by Robin Sloan?

CoteDAzur · 23/09/2015 20:52

Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke. It's the book that The Night Circus is trying to be - clever, complex, literary, witty.

Definitely Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, but perhaps not for a bedtime read - you could be in danger of being crushed under its weight if you fall asleep! On a serious note though, it is quite complex and needs plenty of concentration.

For bedtime, I'd recommend Ben Aaronovitch's Rivers of London series. I've not read this, but I've heard good things about a novel called The Golem and the Djinni. Don't know the author's name though. It may fit the bill.

Thanks all! I've read (and re-read) most of Neil Gaiman's output. Have just finished Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell (in bed...but on the Kindle, so wasn't smothered to death when I nodded off)

Will look up Mr Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore.

And thankyou for reminding me of Ben Aaronovitch. I have read one of the Rivers Of London books but had totally forgotten how much I enjoyed it.
Just read the plot summary for The Golem and the Djinni and that looks good so i'll give that a go too.

I think you would also like The End Of Mr Y.

I loved Station Eleven, Emily St John Mandel, reminded me of The Night Circus.

The Magicians by Lev Grossman is fantastic trilogy which I really enjoyed- complex, not particularly sympathetic characters but amazing story.

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 27/09/2015 19:46

Liked the Golem. Irritated beyond belief by Mr Y.
I prefer a little less whimsy, so China Mieville for me. Dh has just put a book called The Vorhh on his wish list-anyone read it? Looks good.

The Golem and the Djinni by Helen Wecker had something of a similar feel to it for me.
I also enjoyed The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman, but you may have already read that one.

Adored The Night Circus. Couldn't get into Jonathan Strange at all. Have you tried The Lies of Locke Lamora? Absolutely loved it!

Pipbin · 12/10/2015 22:22

Have you tried Jasper Fforde?

I second Rivers of London, too.
