There's a sequel to Florence and Giles - The Girl Who Couldn't Read.

Will have a trawl through my reading list and come back with a few suggestions.

KurriKurri · 16/09/2015 20:46

Have you read any Sarah Waters? - I'd suggest, Affinity and The Little Stranger - for mystery.

The Behaviour of Moths - by Poppy Adams

The Ice Twins - S K Tremayne

The Thirteenth Tale - Diane Setterfield

Any of Susan Hill's ghost stories

Dark Matter by Michelle Paver

When Night Were Cold by Susanna Jones

We Were Liars by E Lockhart.

Hope some of those are the kind of thing you might like Smile

Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger might suit you?

Oh also adding a link to Literature Map - in case people don;t know about it - I love it for finding authors similar to ones I like.

Lucy Woods has a book of short stories also- Diving Bells and they're all hauntingly odd.

I also suggest the Little Stranger by Sarah Waters.

Also The Ocean at the end of the Lane by Neil Gaiman.

Is Weathering good? It was going to be my next purchase...

DuchessofMalfi · 16/09/2015 21:05

Looks like Kurri and I have similar tastes in books :) Adding The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert, The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry, The Winter Ghosts by Kate Mosse.

The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters is deliciously creepy, Fingersmith is one of my favourite reads of this year. I like Susan Hill but don't think any of her subsequent ghost stories are half as scary as The Woman in Black but they are still a good read. Dark Matter by Michelle Paver is good, but I didn't find it that scary.

Yes to The Little Stranger, which I recently enjoyed reading. You may also like We Have Always Lived in the Castle, by Shirley Jackson.

another vote for 'The ice twins'...i am the surviving twin of a pair of identical twins ( my sister died when we were young teens) and it rattled me beyond belief...

thriftychicken · 27/09/2015 19:03

I am about half way through the ice twins now and enjoying it . I have also managed to get diving belles and when nights were cold to read next .
