Just that. Can be proper literature or supermarket chick lit. But I want to need tissues.

Yes, Tess, Attonement - cried buckets, The Reader by Bernard Shlink, and Precious Bane by Mary Webb. Also The Colour Purple - it changed my daughters life! X

A song for issy- can't remember the author. Had me sobbing. Friends who I passed it on to, have passed it back- too sad!
It's very good.

Birdsong- that is an incredible book!

Am watching with interest- love all the recommendations!

A Tree Grows In Brooklyn - Betty Smith

TwllBach · 13/09/2015 17:13

Another Dorothy koomson one... Goodnight Beautiful. Sob every time.

Seconding Goodnight Mr Tom.

SophiaofSpain · 13/09/2015 17:19

Tully by Paulina Simons was good I remember that one.
The Prince of Tides , also a film with Barbra Streisand And Nick Nolte is a true Epic tearjerker. And whilst on crying films you can never not cry at Beaches.....

jeee · 13/09/2015 17:20

Little Boy Lost, Marghanita Laski - young boy who'd been mislaid in the chaos of occupied France. Available on kindle.

Good Wives. Beth's death scene.

The Silver Sword is good for a few tears. I really struggled to read the last couple of chapters to my children - the lump in my throat kept getting bigger.

And no list of weepies is complete without The Railway Children.

jeee · 13/09/2015 17:22

I have to add Paul Gallico to the list - The Snow Goose, The Small Miracle, Love of Seven Dolls.....

SophiaofSpain · 13/09/2015 17:22

If you like dogs then Markey & Me will have you in floods.

My teen dd sobbed her heart out over The fault in our stars

BoreOfWhabylon · 13/09/2015 17:39

Tinktheterrible · 13/09/2015 17:41

Seconding Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. Wept buckets and just couldn't put it down.

SorrelForbes · 13/09/2015 17:44

Requiem for a Wren and On The Beach by Neville Shute.

Five Children on the Western Front by Kate Saunders. I read it on holiday this summer and lay by the pool sobbing.

SoftBlocks · 13/09/2015 17:46

I agree Never Let Me Go.

tobee · 13/09/2015 22:18

On the Beach - Nevil Shute
A Prayer for Owen Meany - John Irving
In a Glass Darkly - Jostein Gaarder

werewolfinladderedtights · 14/09/2015 19:19

The Wrong Boy by Willy Russell goto me. Also another vote for Birdsong.

cheapskatemum · 14/09/2015 20:28

Gone with the Wind - the bit where Scarlett's upstairs in bed and Rhett's downstairs and all she wants is for him to come up and he nearly does, but then doesn't. It must be 40 years since I read it and I still remember how much I sobbed!

Also: Love Story - the vibe is retro this evening, clearly!

More recently, I too blubbed at My Best Friend's Girl by Dorothy Koomson.

onlywhenyouleave · 14/09/2015 20:31

You need to read The Secret of the Tides (not sure of the author). Absolutely heart-breaking Sad

My DSis gave me it for my holiday but I didn't manage to read it till I got home. So glad otherwise I would have been sat on a sun lounger sobbing my heart out!!

GelfBride · 14/09/2015 20:33

Jean de Florette/Manon des Sources collectively known as The Water Of The Hills by Marcel Pagnon. You will cry. You will think about the story for months after.

MyDogEatsBalloons · 14/09/2015 20:38

A Fine Balance, by Rohinton Mistry. I'd love to reread it, but not sure I can put myself through it again!

Yourethe1formefatty · 14/09/2015 20:44

The Kite Runner.

Still not over it 6 months later
