Just that. Can be proper literature or supermarket chick lit. But I want to need tissues.

The hand that first held mine, Maggie o'farrell. Fantastic book and I have never cried so hard at reading anything.

WhenWillYouMakeMyTelephoneRing · 12/09/2015 18:55

Seconding Me Before You. If you wanted to go upmarket, Atonement.

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 12/09/2015 18:57

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes had me in bits by the pool on holiday. I gave it to my Mum and then dd and it had the same effect on them. Brilliant book.

Two masterpieces on the Holocaust:

The last of the just, by Andre Schwarz Bart

And Maus, by Art Spiegelman

MairzyDoats · 12/09/2015 19:07

Oh yes, After You'd Gone made me sob! And The Hand That First Held Mine. Although not as hard. Maggie O'Farrell is brilliant.

BettyTurpinsHotpot · 12/09/2015 19:29

Five Children on the Western Front by Kate Saunders.

BrienneofQarth · 12/09/2015 19:38

Thirding Me Before You, as far as I remember that had me sobbing more than any other book I've ever read!

Also Captain Corelli's Mandolin, every single time.

Bridge across my sorrows - The Christina Noble Story

I guarantee lots and lots of snots and tears. You will arise in the morning with pissholes in the snow for eyes from bawling your eyes out Grin

It's a true story too, incredibly moving and sad. She's an exceptional human being.

Sorry, battery went! Thanks for these so far, am madly amazon-ing! It was Me Before You which I've just finished which promoted me to look for more gutwrenching howlers! I see the sequel is due out soon. Don't know if I will read it or not tbh as MBY was so very complete.

100% agree with MsMermaid about The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey.

Also The Book of Lost Things by John Connoly

WiIdfire · 12/09/2015 22:10

Goodnight Mister Tom. - every time I read it!

BestIsWestOfGallifrey · 12/09/2015 22:13

Not fiction but The Common Years by Jilly Cooper always makes me howl.

MsWazowski · 12/09/2015 22:15

I recently read The Shock of the Fall, had to keep taking a break for the last 30 pages or so. I was properly sobbing. Brilliant book.

RhuBarbarella · 13/09/2015 12:25

If you're an animal or dog person. . Timbuktu by Paul Auster had me crying buckets. Fabulous book.

HamaTime · 13/09/2015 12:28

The only book that has ever had me in tears is Bridges of Maddison County Blush
Me Before You left me cold. I hated the whole thing and everyone in it.

Parrish · 13/09/2015 12:29

The Orchardist

It creeps up on you and I sobbed towards the end. Never saw it coming.

Brilliant read

IHaveBrilloHair · 13/09/2015 12:31

Never let me go

AnneEtAramis · 13/09/2015 12:35

The Shock of the Fall had one very simple line that made me sob until my eyes were bright red. A book called Circles Around the Sun made me cry and cry but my reaction to both if these is because they are very personal to me.

Yes to Captain Corelli's Mandolin and actually many of his books, including his new one The Dust that falls from Dreams.

I was devastated by Tess for dads afterwards.

AnneEtAramis · 13/09/2015 12:36

Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones too.

Scarzo · 13/09/2015 12:44

Was just about to recommend Shock of the Fall as well. I read it after seeing it on the book reviews here.

I finished it at bed time and cried myself to sleep. It manages to be really uplifting as well as very sad. Loved it - especially Nanny Noo.

Clueing4looks · 13/09/2015 12:48

Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz made me cry at the end, as did The Host by Stephanie Mayer
