Sign up here and say which novels you plan to read. I'm starting with The Bone Clocks, aiming to finish it in September.

All discussions of David Mitchell's novels are welcome Smile

The Bone Clocks for me - not sure when exactly. I read and loved Cloud Atlas last year.

CoteDAzur · 07/07/2015 22:34

Checking in Smile

DuchessofMalfi · 08/07/2015 06:22

Who else has read Black Swan Green? My one and only Mitchell novel so far. I loved it but realise that this one is relatively easy compared with Cloud Atlas Smile

Depending on how well I get on with The Bone Clocks, I plan also to have a shot at Cloud Atlas this year too.

I just started the Bone Clocks yesterday!

Would love to read along.

Cooroo · 08/07/2015 06:33

Too many books to read along but I'll drop in as he's one of my favourite. Yes Duchess I've read it twice (BSG) - once on audio which was excellent. I'm a similar age so it was very evocative. Loved Bone Clocks too.

Cooroo · 08/07/2015 06:33

Sorry, I meant I've got too many books to read now, not that he wrote too many!

CoteDAzur · 08/07/2015 11:07

If anyone is interested, one of David Mitchell's most acclaimed novels Ghostwritten is £1.49 on the Kindle at the moment Smile

DuchessofMalfi · 08/07/2015 12:01

You beat me to it Cote - was just coming on here to say the same thing :o

Have just bought it, to add to my exploration of his novels. Looks intriguing.

It's almost as if Amazon.co.uk knows about our David Mitchell read-along thread Shock Grin

Just bought Ghostwritten on kindle!

I am savouring The Bone Clocks and so pleased I will be able to chat with other readers about this fascinating novel. I have Cloud Atlas on my kindle which I am planning to read to discuss as well. Thank you Duchess for starting us off.

I hadn't realised when I bought The Bone Clocks that it is connected to Cloud Atlas with linking characters. I don't feel I am struggling having not read Cloud Atlas but I am interested to read people's views who have read his earlier novel.

I am in awe of Mitchell's narrative skills in jumping to a new narrator with a completely different background and insight.

DuchessofMalfi · 08/07/2015 16:01

I've been trying to work out whether I can find the time to read Ghostwritten before I go on holiday. Really want to get started on Bone Clocks but realistically it will have to be September.

Did I imagine this or is there a link between Black Swan Green and one of the others?

I'd like to join too as I have The Bone Clocks on my Kindle waiting to be read I'm also planning to buy Ghostwritten as I saw it was included in the Kindle Summer sale. I have really enjoyed all of his previous books I've read which are:
Cloud Atlas
Black Swan Green
Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet

I'm currently about 10% in to The Narrow Road to Deep North so will read Bone Clocks once I have finished this.

crapfatbanana · 08/07/2015 17:42

I finished The Bone Clocks a little while back. I've previously read Cloud Atlas and The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet and I have just begun re-reading The Thousand Autumns.

I proper love David Mitchell.

southeastdweller · 08/07/2015 21:38

I also bought Ghostwritten today (thanks, Cote). Will read this or/and The Bone Clocks perhaps early September after I've finished some of the books on my bookshelf that have been there for quite some time.

jetSTAR · 09/07/2015 13:18

Thanks for the Ghostwritten tip cote bought it!

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 09/07/2015 23:41

I'm restarting The Bone Clocks (after stroking it's lovely cover -it's one of few hardbacks I have, I just can't resist some). Did start it a couple of months ago but was too distracted to take any notice of it

TobikkoRoll · 09/07/2015 23:49

Black Swan Green is the only David Mitchell book I haven't read I think. Love his writing.

Galaxymum which characters link between Cloud Atlas and The Bone Clocks please? I read TBC when it first came out (planning a summer hols re-read next month) so don't remember it that clearly.

Ghostwritten was my favourite for a long while, but didn't hold my attention so much when re-reading it recently Sad

BestIsWest · 11/07/2015 20:21

Marking my place. I've read both Cloud Atlas and The Bone Clocks this year. I loved and hated parts of Cloud Atlas in equal measure. I think I marginally preferred The Bone Clocks but that may be because I read it first. Off to look for Ghostwritten on Kindle.

LassUnparalleled · 12/07/2015 17:29

Some overlaps here.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bone_Clocks

I'm sure there are more. There is a character called Louisa Rey who is in Cloud Atlas and I'm sure is mentioned in Ghostwritten. The character is a reference to Thornton Wilder 's The Bridge of San Luis Rey which shares the same themes of serendipity and unknowning /unrecognised connections which Mitchell uses in his novels.

LassUnparalleled · 12/07/2015 17:30

I loved all his books but especially Cloud Atlas. I also think he is writer you need to read in book format as you need to be able to jump back to check things.

I read Bone Clocks earlier this year, and I'm currently reading Cloud Atlas. It is my second attempt at the latter and finding it isn't gripping me, hope it rallies as it goes on. Most say it is his best so I am hopeful.

I enjoyed Bone Clocks and would say to those contemplating it that despite its size it is a fast read.

DuchessofMalfi · 14/07/2015 18:31

As soon as I've finished my current books I am going to be reading Ghostwritten. Looking forward to getting started on it later this week :)

ladydepp · 14/07/2015 22:33

Ghostwritten is one of my favourite books, hope you all enjoy it too, especially at a bargain price!

I think the only one I haven't read yet is Black Swan Green; I will be v interested to see what others think of Bone Clocks.

TheCrowFromBelow · 15/07/2015 13:49

I'm reading the Bone Clocks now and really enjoying it. Also loved Black Swan Green and Cloud Atlas.

I have not read Ghostwritten, but just ordered - thank you.

I have started Number9Dream twice and not got into it, though.
