Anybody read it?
Your opinion please.

I did finish it, but found it annoying and unbelievable. Some of it was amusing, but none of the characters were likeable. Don't want to spoil, but the bit in the middle was ridiculous.

I enjoyed it. Much preferred it to One Day, which I found quite annoying (didn't like the central characters).

Y0la · 05/07/2015 18:07

oh good, I might buy it if it's better than One Day. I found that annoying as well.

I loved starter for ten.

BikeRunSki · 05/07/2015 18:19

I preferred One Day, but much preferred Starter for Ten. Much the same opinion as florentina.

DuchessofMalfi · 05/07/2015 18:24

I haven't read Starter for Ten yet - quite a few people have said they enjoyed that one. Have seen the film, which was good :)

I really enjoyed it, but at the same found it depressing and found certain things the protagonist did / said / thought incredibly frustrating. These were good things, in my book, as the novel is largely about the breakdown of a long term relationship, without the need to Hollywood what happens.

Starter For Ten was brilliant; I loved One Day as well - hated both films though Grin

southeastdweller · 13/07/2015 22:17

It was OK, glad I didn't buy it. All the characters were complete P.I.T.A bores.

I felt his first book was his best. Also very much enjoyed The Understudy.

tripfiction · 14/07/2015 11:34

I enjoyed this book - it is annoying in parts, indeed as others have said, but acutely observes the demise of marriage and family breakdown. And of course, loved the locations of the modern day Grand Tour of Europe :)

StupidBloodyKindle · 14/07/2015 23:20

I read it but as others said, I had little sympathy for or empathy with any of them. Husband not spontaneous, Mother boho hippy chick, Sulky brattish teen with crappy girlfriend. Was all a bit contrived awaiting the screenplay.
I quite liked the travel bits. Never read Starter for ten but loved the film.
Less enamoured for One Day compared with world and his wife until the Edinburgh bits but I have athi.g for Arthur's seat. The film Love, Rosie reminded me of One day in terms of missing opportunities but was far far betterthan Anne eeh bah gum Hathaway and I suspect might be better than the Cecilia Aherne(?) novel on which it was based.

I finished this last night and really enjoyed it.

IMO it was SOOooooo much better than One Day which I really didn't like at all. My problem with One Day was that I didn't like and didn't care about any of the characters.

In US I liked and could empathise quite a bit with the main character. Of course sometimes he was a stupid arse and did or said things he later regretted, but I think that just made him seem more believable really.

I especially liked the Grand Tour because we have just come back from Tuscany and travelled quite a bit on trains between the places he visits.

I would recommend it anyway.

Trickytricky · 15/07/2015 13:30

I'd recommend it. I've really enjoyed all his novels so far - prob liked Starter for Ten the best. I liked Us as it doesn't try to be hollywoody and faces up to the fact that long term relationships can be hard and aren't always perfect. Would def recommend it. An easy read.

DuchessofMalfi · 15/07/2015 14:14

5foot - that's just what I thought about Us and One Day Smile

thehypocritesoaf · 25/08/2015 14:03

Finished this yesterday.

Didn't like 'one day' much and I wanted to dislike this however it pulled me in. Absurdly readable, I sympathised with the narrator but I did really dislike Connie...I found it very satisfying and sweet somehow.
