The thread on diminutive names reminded me of these books. I had at least one when I was a child. The friend was 'little friend Susan'. I remember they were quite charming. Did anyone else read them or still have them?

I loved Milly Molly Mandy.

Still have all the books in a box in the loft.

HuwEdwards · 14/11/2006 18:53

Bought one for DD1 (5) - it didn't really stand the test of time with her tbh - especially the illustrations. Sweet tho.

tamum · 14/11/2006 18:53

Yes! My mother read them to me because she had them as a child, and I used to read them to dd. Billy Blunt was a friend too There are quite a few threads on here discussing them, I think Franny is a big fan.

I read them as a child and so did my mum and she is 75! Funnily enough I saw one in the library last week - I couldn't resist a peak inside at the map on the first pages. Took me back years!

Ellieorange · 14/11/2006 18:59

Great, am glad they are still available. Wonder if my ds would be into them! Maybe while he is still small enough...

ds1 liked them in year 2

deegward · 14/11/2006 19:00

I loved her, loved it loved it, one of my regrets at not having a girl, no excuse to read them

JoolsToo · 14/11/2006 19:01

yes I loved - read them from the school library in the 50's

MrsMills · 14/11/2006 19:03

I remember she had a duck which followed her to school and I remember she went to a haberdashery (sp) store to buy material to make a party dress. I think it was pink and white striped.

I loved Milly Molly Mandy and I think I'm going to have to start searching for the original books. Thank you for reminding me.

deegward · 14/11/2006 19:10

No i remember the song, dss are both more horrid henrys than MMM.

UCM · 14/11/2006 19:14

I took DS to the library one day and picked up a copy of MMM and started to read it, only stopping to tell DS to Geroff and go look at some books, whilst I was busily reliving my childhood, he had filled up about 5 cups of water from the water fountain and dotted them around the childrens library

Ellieorange · 14/11/2006 19:23

i never saw a TV programme of it, hope they didn't bastardise the poor child

I had forgotton all about Milly Molly Mandy but loved them, especially the map at the front of the book. And her pink stripey dress.

Must see if I can get hold of a copy. Not sure DS will enjoy them as much as me though

cazzybabs · 14/11/2006 19:34

I love them but they are little twee and I think as a consequence dd1 doesn't guiet get them.

tissy · 14/11/2006 19:44

Dd has a copy bought by my Mum- very recently, so deffo in print at the moment.

I love them, but have to keep explaining to 21st Century dd about the horse and trap, lighting the lamps, farthings, and various other early 20th Century things.

wheresthehamster · 14/11/2006 20:32

I loved the map. I used to imagine myself living there and ponder over the different routes I could take to the school.
DD3 is reading the MMM story book at the moment and I can't get that wretched song out of my head.
I think it was sung by Glynn or Glenn Poole who was part of a singing group called the Poole Family.

FrannyandZucchini · 14/11/2006 20:35

We are huge MMM afficionadoes chez Franny

ds (3.5) adores them and wants to be just like MMM

even dp enjoys them, they are just the fabbest books, only trumped by My Naughty Little Sister

Ellieorange · 14/11/2006 20:45

Oh Yes, we had Naughty Little Sis too, and I remember the pic on the cover VIVIDLY. It was a brownish cover, in fact I think it was illustrated by the same lady who writes the 'Olly and Me' series.
