DH and I sat, slightly panicking, waiting for the questions.

At bedtime, I gently and sensitively (!) asked if she wanted to talk about anything in the book.

"What happens to the ones who don't win the race to the egg? Do they go find other ladies?"

err,no

When I told dd, who is 8, about periods (I thought I'd done it rather well), she said "Right then, I'm getting pregnant. I'm not having periods."

I bought "Hair in Funny Places" the other day. DD2 asked lots and lots of questions about boys especially the night-time emissions. Think we've covered the lot now regarding development and reproduction - just waiting for questions about gay sex next (she has been asking about Freddie Mercury and how he got AIDS so I guess it won't be long).

foxinsocks · 14/11/2006 13:47

oh yes, I find the gay sex questions are definitely the best ones and for some reason, the ones that are brought up most frequently in Public Places

My hairdresser is openly gay and lovely. I might get him to do it when he's cutting their hair!

I bought the book 'mummy laid an egg' for my daughter sometime ago because I could see it'd help me explain the birds and bees to her Its an absolutely brilliant book and as yet I've not approached the subject with her because she's only just coming up to 8. However not long after I bought the book, which must be 3 years ago now, I fell pregnant with my second daughter....so needless to say I didn't read the book well enough myself!

The book is well written, funny and clearly explains where babies come from!
