I bought Birdsong by Sebastien Faulks years ago but could never really get into it.

After reading a MN recommendation, I tried again and appropriately finished it on Remembrance Day.

What a fantastic book - thank you for the recommendation. My pillow was tear sodden.

I have this but haven't read it yet. Think it was 'borrowed' by my Mum (which means half inched when I wasn't looking) and will no doubt be returned unread by her but dog eared and covered in Green & Blacks with a big crease in the spine at about page 50 where she gave up and it lay by the side of her bed for four months with no chance of ever reselling it on Amazon!

Sorry that's brought the tone of your really quite serious thread down, but you have encouraged me to fast track it up the reading pile when I get it back.

that's okay - need a laugh after such a miserable book.

Seriously it's a great read.

Honestly, she thinks I run a library. Any library would fine her for returning books in that state.

I read this years ago and lent it to about 10 different people. One of them was an ex soldier who didn't really read fiction. It converted him to reading in general it was so powerful. I have to say none of his other books are as good. I am ploughing through his latest at the moment and it's better than some but not a patch on Birdsong.

TheHighwayCod · 13/11/2006 16:15

its rude too

MrsSpoon · 13/11/2006 16:17

Right! That's it! If it's "rude" I want it back NOW!!!

TheHighwayCod · 13/11/2006 16:18

realy sexy
teh start iirc

MrsSpoon · 13/11/2006 16:22

Maybe that's why my Mum won't hand it back , I'll take careful note of what pages are well dog eared.

Ah yes - very good sex scenes... 'the Red Room'!

In fact evrything about the way the story is told is very graphic

I read it years ago when it first came out and loved it. It really changed my way of thinking about the First World War. I remember being totally stunned as I finished it. Someone then borrowed it from me and never returned it. I really should read it again.

I do also remember that the sex was VERY graphic.
