Just finished reading this to my dd's aged 8 and 9 ( a chapter a night) and we have loved it, what a fantastic story! MM is wonderful to read out loud, it really flows and the stories are so beautifully told.

porpoise · 12/11/2006 21:15

ooh - and Friend or Foe is fab too - especially if they're in year 3 and doing WWII evacuees.

Miaou · 12/11/2006 21:16

I was blubbing as I read the last chapter this evening cod - am very hormonal atm

we both blubbed
a dn i had to go otu afterwards

Miaou · 12/11/2006 21:18

Oooh that's good to know porpoise - we chose KOTCF because of it's war connection - dd1 is fascinated by stories around the second world war. We read The Silver Sword before this one - another fantastic book.

The Children of Green Knowe next ...

And when they're older, Adolphus Tips and Private Peaceful.
NO-ONE can read Private Peaceful without blubbing.
Even stony stoneface never-weep-in-public types...

cece · 12/11/2006 21:23

Kensuke's Kingdom also fantastic (by same author)

Miaou · 12/11/2006 21:41

Oooh we've got Adolphus Tips, Dd1 got it for her birthday I think. I try to avoid reading stuff she's already read but it's a challenge - I bought The Indian in the Cupboard and she nabbed it and read it

cece, yes cod suggested that one, am going to order it in from the library I think!

My dd loved the Butterfly Lion, slightly shorter to read by themselves

Miaou · 12/11/2006 21:53

Oooh yes that one's good too

Adolphus Tips is on the Blue Peter book award shortlist.

(IMO it's 3rd out of the 3 in its category though.)

porpoise · 12/11/2006 22:07

what are the other two, roisin?

roisin · 12/11/2006 22:20

Joshua Doder: Grk and the Pelotti Gang
Charlie Higson: Blood Fever

roisin · 12/11/2006 22:21

(Private Peaceful won the BP award last year, but IMO it's in a completely different league to Adolphus Tips.)

porpoise · 12/11/2006 22:31

Oh yes I agree. Grk and Young Bond MUCH better than A Tips.
Private Peaceful is superhumanly good, though

roisin · 05/12/2006 20:44

Belated thank you for this Miaou. I got it out of the library, and both ds1 and I have greatly enjoyed it: a big hit. (I had tired a bit of MM, and ds1 has never been a big fan, so this was a real relief.)

MrMiaou · 07/12/2006 16:43

Oooh good roisin, so glad they enjoyed it!!

MrMiaou · 07/12/2006 16:43

ooops sorry, that's Miaou posting, not MrMiaou
