Christophewouldgetit · 27/03/2015 23:30

I have decided to read all of the utterly wonderful Discworld novels in order from the beginning as a slight homage to the great man.

Anyone fancy joining me?

They used to be my go-to library book and I would always pick one up when I felt I was missing a book iykwim (and I know you will Grin)

What a lovely Homage...
I'd love to.
Haven't read any of his books.

Just ordered 'The Unadulterated Cat' as a gift for dp who hated cats as much as me but dd2 bought a kitten just before Christmas and she's moved out and we kept the cat. We love him to bits.

Let me know which book you're thinking of starting with...
Looking forward to learning all about Discworld.

Christophewouldgetit · 28/03/2015 09:24

The first one is Colour of Magic and is a 'gentle' introduction to the wonderful world of Mr Pratchett... not his best by any means as they just get better & better but I think you need to start at the top - especially if you've never read any either (am a little Envy as you get to experience it all for the first time)

I hope you enjoy them - they are very clever but oh so silly, I love them!!

You might find it worth getting "The Compleat Ankh-Morpork: City Guide" it has a useful map and info about some of the characters.

comeagainforbigfudge · 28/03/2015 09:42

Oh I love pratchett books.

I don't have them all, but may make it my mission to complete my collection Grin

Weirdly, the day before he died I picked up Thud to read. Not my favourite as it's a slow burner, but I still enjoyed it.

RueDeWakening · 28/03/2015 09:45

I'll join in, I have a complete collection (mostly 1st Ed hardbacks Grin) - I'd recommend powering through the first two, they definitely get better after that.

MargolottaOfUberwold · 28/03/2015 09:56

I'm in Grin

would you list your plnned reading order so i can hunt down the books

Christophewouldgetit · 28/03/2015 11:50

I was just planning on working my way down the list. Here are the first ten:

  1. The Colour of Magic
  2. The Light Fantastic
  3. Equal Rites
  4. Mort
  5. Sourcery
  6. Wyrd Sisters
  7. Pyramids
  8. Guards! Guards!
  9. Eric
10. Moving Pictures

Not having done an online book club before, do we read at our own pace and then post once we're through each book to give our thoughts and start a discussion?

I am very Envy of all your first editions - Abe Books and Ebay will be getting lots of my custom over the next few months Grin

I think I have the colour of magic somewhere, but have never gotten around to reading it. Sounds like the perfect excuse! I'm in!

iamEarthymama · 28/03/2015 14:55

I will join in too!

Still grieving and can't believe that on Christmases to come I won't have a new TP hardback in my stocking.

(Though am I right that there is a Tiffany Aching novel to be published?)

irretating · 28/03/2015 21:19

I'm game. Mad keen STP fan here.

Calfon · 31/03/2015 07:30

Can I join. STP is my favorite author and I am devastated since his death. I always have a Pratchett on the go and last year starting working through his books on Audible -currently listening to A Hat Full of Sky. I have been meaning for ages to read them in published order and it seems now would be a good time.

InMySpareTime · 31/03/2015 07:38

I have them all too (well, all the Discworld ones - I never got on with the Long Earth series).
His collection of short stories is great (A Blink of the screen?)

Christophewouldgetit · 31/03/2015 08:55

Oooh - lovely Grin

I've not quite finished Colour of Magic yet but almost there. It's been ages since I've picked up a Discworld novel and this makes me remember why I like them so much.

All the little nods and clever little parodies are a joy - I remember loving the idea of the picture box and genuinely wishing that's how cameras worked.

I might have to get the Compleat Ankh Morpoch which was mentioned earlier on as it looks amazing and it would be great to have this to hand (and I love finding out more about favourite characters!)

I'd be up for this! Another one with a complete collection as I'm old enough yo have bought all but first three as they were published.
I read v slowly these days though.
Is it worth having a thread for each book with titles such as 'SYP Book club The Colour of Magic's etc? So people don't see spoilers as they're reading?

Christophewouldgetit · 31/03/2015 17:14

That's a good idea Atomic - will start the first when I finish the first as it is imminent Grin

Christophewouldgetit · 01/04/2015 00:28

AtomicDog · 01/04/2015 01:09

AtomicDog · 01/04/2015 01:10

Of course, now I have to get on and read it! Grin
