I'm just wondering what other people thought of this. I almost gave up on it after about 200 pages but I'm glad I stuck with it. I remember saying on another thread that male writers often don't write convincing female characters but that doesn't apply to this book at all. Eileen seems so real and everything that happens to the Leary family is totally believable. It is a very impressive first novel.

I enjoyed it and found it all quite believable. A little longwinded towards the end. I engaged more with Eileen than Connell. Interesting that Ed was quite a hard person to live with long before the diagnosis. I also enjoyed the descriptions of Jackson Heights, Bronxville etc. Eileen certainly had a tough life in lots of ways!

I just loved that book, it was right up my street. Eileen was not a very likeable character but it was such a true decription of what is must be like. It was long but i was so absorbed in it i never felt it a tad longwinded.
