Who is your favourite/least favourite Charles Dickens Character

Favourite- Mark Tapley (Martin Chuzzelwit) I like him because he always tries to be cheerful under trying circumstances which I admire and he seems quite modern. Think he might have been quite handsome as well (if he actually existed)

Least favourite - Uriah Heep. He gives me the creeps. Think he spoils David Copperfield which is a great book until he is introduced.

Quite a few but straight off the top of my head from Great Expectations

Favourite : Joe Gargery

Least Favourite: Estella

Quangle · 22/02/2015 19:16

Yes worst is Uriah Heap though I actually think he's a great character because I am often reminded of him when I meet weird people with damp hands!

Best - Betsy Trotwood? Pip? I really liked Susan Nipper in Dombey and Son too.

Am just reading Martin Chuzzlewit now and greatly enjoying the Pecksniffs

TheEagle · 22/02/2015 19:20

Favourite - Amy Dorrit from Little Dorrit

Least favourite - Bill Sykes from Oliver Twist. Gives me nightmares Shock

LadyGlen · 22/02/2015 19:24

I have to confess to not having read all the novels.

My favourite from those which I have read is, I think, Arthur Clennam in Little Dorrit But I'm also rather fond of Daniel Doyce from LD and Newman Noggs from Nicholas Nickleby. Also I like the Bagnets in Bleak House.

My least favourite character just off the top of my head - I may think of others later - is Tulkinghorn. He is just so relentless.

stevienickstophat · 22/02/2015 19:27

Favourite - Joe Gargery or Ebeneezer Scrooge. I like Wemmick too. And Miss Havisham.

Least favourite - Bloody Bob Cratchit. Tiny Tim's a bit of an insufferable prig, too. Not mad on Estella, or Pip, for that matter.

FrChewieLouie · 22/02/2015 19:29

Great thread - so many of both, it's hard to narrow them down to just one of each.

Worst - Daniel Quilp is pretty far beyond the pale, and I always found Dora Spenlow irritating, though I had a bit more sympathy for her on the last reread.

Best - I like Mark Tapley as well; he's the real hero of the book since Martin would defo have died in that American swamp if not for him. Also like Flora Finching from Little Dorrit a lot. And loads of the villains - Dickens wrote some compelling and multi-dimensional villains e.g. Bradley Headstone, John Jasper, Tulkinghorn. Oh, and Smike from Nicholas Nickleby. Hmm, better stop before I remember a dozen more.

stevienickstophat · 22/02/2015 19:31

What about lovely Sissy Jupe?

FrChewieLouie · 22/02/2015 19:31

(Obvs Smike is not a villain!)

morethanpotatoprints · 22/02/2015 19:31

Favourite has to be Mr McCawber as I have based my whole finances throughout my life on his quote.

Least favourite has to be Bill Sykes, coz he murdered Nancy.

turdfairynomore · 22/02/2015 19:36

I think Bill Sykes is my favourite.......because he's my least favourite! It makes sense to me! He makes the Mitchell brothers in eastenders seem like pussy cats! I remember reading the book for the first time and being shocked at him beating up Bull's Eye almost as much as him.murdering Nancy! My DD was obsessed by the musical when I was pregnant. She wanted Oliver for a boy and Fancy (as she insisted she was called!) for a girl! She got her way -with Oliver, not Fancy!!!

turdfairynomore · 22/02/2015 19:39

Sykes? Or Sikes?? It's the latter, isn't it? Or is it?? The more I look, the less I know!!!

fairnotfit · 22/02/2015 19:39

I like Sissy Jupe.

And, for some reason, I've always really enjoyed Noah Claypole and his girlfriend Charlotte.

I particularly dislike Bitzer.

albertcampionscat · 22/02/2015 19:43

Hold on. Is this 'dislike' as in 'would not like if you met them' or 'dislike' as in badly written? Mrs Jellyby, e.g., is awful, but magnificently awful.

TheEagle · 22/02/2015 20:33

Sorry, it's Sikes

Mea culpa

funnyossity · 22/02/2015 21:11

I do love Betsey Trotwood and had the name all ready for a girl, but she missed out again!

mrsschatzepage · 23/02/2015 13:43

Hi everyone! its great to hear your likes and dislikes. I meant dislike as in if you met them. My second fave is another one from martin chuzzelwit , Tom Pinch cause he is very gentle (like me) Im also envious of his job organising someone's library. That would be my dream job! I also like Captain Cuttle from Dombey and son and Micawber. I seem to like all the jolly people.

I dont like Quilp either or Mrs Clennam from Little Dorrit she is very stern and cold. I find Dora Spenlow fron DC v annoying. Also Little Nell is rather bland.

Mea culpa too Eagle! Somehow it seemed right? But yet wrong? Have we been brainwashed by Eric Sykes? Melanie Sykes?!? Dickens will be spinning in his grave!!

lucysnowe · 24/02/2015 17:51

Best: Eugene Wrayburn from Our Mutual Friend cos he is a bit cynical and sexy (for Dickens, anyway). Worst: Agnes from David Copperfield cos she is such a bleh :)

sassytheFIRST · 24/02/2015 18:06

I love to hate Fagin. All you Sikes haterz, remember that he was once one of Fagins boys; Fagin made him what he became. Fagin is nastier because he appears not to be. Don't be fooled by the musical version !

Can't bear any of the Cratchits. So worthy and saccharine. Plus the son wot dies in Dombey and son. Just get on and cark it, will ya??

DameEdnasBridesmaid · 24/02/2015 21:57

Miss Havisham. An icon.

carlajean · 24/02/2015 22:17

One of my favourites is The Marchioness from The Old Curiosity Shop.
About the dislikes, there's the characters that Dickens intended us to dislike, like Bill Sykes or Quilp, and those he wanted us to like, and failed, like his early heroines.

IsadoraQuagmire · 26/02/2015 14:29

I like Fanny Squeers (because she's hilarious) and the Infant Phenomenon (Ninetta) both from Nicholas Nickleby.
Can't stand Agnes Wickfield or Little Em'ly

HappydaysArehere · 07/03/2015 01:47

Favourite - Joe Gargery and I also loved the Infant Phenomenon.
