'Scuse typos - fingers not working (or brain).

antimatter · 25/01/2015 22:02

It by S.King is 1396 pages!

Sootgremlin · 25/01/2015 22:02

I have This thing of Darkness, The Luminaries and The Goldfinch on my to read list.

Crimson Petal and the White didn't feel that long at all. Iq84 is technically 3 books Grin making the distinction because I've yet to read books 2 and 3
I love a good long book if it grips me, nothing like it Smile

CoteDAzur · 25/01/2015 22:03

I wonder which one I read in 1980s.

I managed less than a dozen pages of, 'The Crimson Petal' and they felt very, very long indeed. Grin

CoteDAzur · 25/01/2015 22:05

I read the entire length of Crimson Petal And The White and was in tears towards the end of it (because it just wouldn't end and I had read too far to quit).

Pillars of the earth is 969 pages - that felt reeeeeaaaally long.

IT, on the other hand, I can happily get through in three days.

OverAndAbove · 25/01/2015 22:07

I've been reading it on and off for ages, and am loving it. I'm at page 621 (of 1005) so should be able to finish by March! It's a good curl up with the curtains drawn, winter book...

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/01/2015 22:08

Cote - if you read it in the 80s, I'm pretty sure it would have been the shorter one.

Sootgremlin · 25/01/2015 22:08

That would be the present tense I guess, Remus Grin

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/01/2015 22:11

I can remember nothing at all about it tbh, Soot. But yes, if it was present tense I would have hated it.

Lazymummy2014 · 25/01/2015 22:12

Ooh I love Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell! Might re-read. Seconding the recommendation to read the footnotes, is a whole brilliant load of detail in there!

lemisscared · 25/01/2015 22:13

loved this book.

PlumpingUpPartridge · 25/01/2015 22:14

I LOVE this book - it took me a couple of weeks due to only reading at weekends/bedtime (not carting THAT in on the Tube) but well worth it.

'The ladies of Grace Adieu' is a collection of short stories set in the same universe and is rather good (non-spoilery too, I think).

antimatter · 25/01/2015 22:16

I have The Fountainhead - 752 on my audible to listen to soon.

I love big book too! I am currently enjoying the Luminaries (after many attempts I got into it)

Harry Potter order of the phoenix - 901 (haven't read any HP books)

GothMummy · 25/01/2015 22:17

I read it last year, and absolutely loved it, I will re-read it so I can join in the discussion!

CoteDAzur · 25/01/2015 22:27

Remus - So I have an excuse to read The Stand again, too. Yay Grin

frogletsmum · 25/01/2015 22:30

Signing in too, but might take a while to start it. Finished The Luminaries last week and read The Goldfinch and Signature of All things last year. I am not daunted Grin Doorstep books seem to be in fashion now.

Was given This Thing of Darkness as a birthday present today by lovely friend and am soooo excited about it!

Sootgremlin · 25/01/2015 22:35

I was on Lord Voldemort's side by the end of Order of the Phoenix. Just get rid of the lot of them and their silly names.

I exaggerate, but it really could have done with a good edit Grin

CoteDAzur · 25/01/2015 23:04

I haven't read any Harry Potter. It will be interesting to read what HP fans think of JS & Mr N.

When does everyone plan to start reading it? I'm allowing myself five weeks which hopefully will be more than enough time, starting at half term. I'm away for Easter from 28th March for a week so will post my thoughts with spoilers when I get back unless I can find somewhere with WiFi. And non spoiler thoughts before I go.

ArabellaStrange · 26/01/2015 08:13

I have read it. Twice. And one of those times was just before christmas.
So.I will look in but not going to read it for a third time.
I have also read The Crimson Petal and The White.
And a book called Quicksilver, which is 921 pages long but not the second two, yet
And also Bleak House which is a bit of a tome.
I could go on but might be a bit dull.
Does anyone know who they have cast to play Arabella?

ArabellaStrange · 26/01/2015 08:18

Oh and I have read The Ladies of Grace Adeiu.
I also suggested to the beeb, via email, that they adapt it for tv around seven years ago took them long enough
Is the 28th of March when it gets shown?

SoupDragon · 26/01/2015 08:22

This is one of the very few books I have given up on.

I remember reading the whole Lord of the Rings (1178 pages) in under a week without noticing that it was a long book so it wasn't the size of the book that put me off. I sent JS&MN to a charity shop after it spent a stint as a doorstop.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/01/2015 08:26

Happy birthday, Frog. :)
